Do Congolese passport holders need a visa for Thailand?

By Vinayak Gupta · Travel Writer, Tripmojo · Updated · Reviewed by Simran Raheja

Yes. Citizens of the Republic of the Congo need a visa for Thailand, applied for in advance through the Thailand e-Visa portal. The Republic of the Congo is on neither the 60-day visa exemption list nor the visa on arrival list in force today, and the revised exemption scheme the Cabinet approved on 19 May 2026, not yet gazetted, changes those lists rather than adding any new route for Congolese passports. For a holiday the visa is a single-entry tourist visa (TR), handled online by the Royal Thai Embassy in Abuja.

Entry requirements

  • A Republic of the Congo passport valid for at least six months from the intended date of entry into Thailand.
  • An approved Thailand e-Visa, printed and carried with the passport.
  • A recent passport-sized photograph taken within the last six months, uploaded with the application.
  • A confirmed round-trip flight itinerary showing every leg between the Republic of the Congo and Thailand.
  • Proof of accommodation in Thailand for the whole stay, such as a hotel reservation or an invitation letter.
  • A recent bank statement showing sufficient funds. Thai immigration expects travellers to be able to show the equivalent of 20,000 baht per person.
  • An International Health Certificate for yellow fever vaccination, because the Republic of the Congo is on Thailand’s list of yellow fever infected areas.
  • A Thailand Digital Arrival Card submitted online within three days before arrival.

How to apply for a Thailand e-Visa

Apply at thaievisa.go.th and choose the Royal Thai Embassy, Abuja, as the processing mission. The Abuja embassy is accredited to the Republic of the Congo and states that it does not accept paper applications, so there is no counter to visit in Brazzaville and nothing to post. You must be physically in the Republic of the Congo when you apply, and the embassy can cancel an application if you cannot show that you were.

Complete the online form, upload the passport, photograph, flight booking, accommodation proof, bank statement and yellow fever certificate, and pay the visa fee through the portal’s online payment system. The fee is non-refundable, and the embassy may ask for more documents or call you to an interview.

Allow 15 business days for processing, and be aware that some cases take four to six weeks. The embassy recommends applying at least four to six weeks before travel but not more than three months before departure, because a single-entry tourist visa must be used within three months of issue.

Approval arrives by email as an e-Visa approval document. There is no sticker in the passport. Print the document and show it to the airline at check-in and to the immigration officer in Thailand. Then complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th within three days of your arrival.

Good to know

  • Do not rely on lists that say "Congo" is visa exempt or eligible for visa on arrival. Thailand’s 60-day exemption covers 93 named countries and territories and its visa on arrival covers 31, and neither list includes the Republic of the Congo or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Both Congos need a visa in advance, and they may not apply through the same Thai embassy, so make sure you select the mission accredited to your country in the portal.
  • The application cannot be edited after submission. The Abuja embassy says a typographical error in the passport number, name or dates leads to rejection, the fee is kept, and you apply again. Check every field against the passport before paying.
  • The date printed as "Enter Before" on the visa is the last day you may arrive, not the length of stay. The stay permit is the stamp the immigration officer puts in your passport on arrival, up to 60 days for a tourist visa, and that stamp is what decides when you must leave.
  • Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health lists the Republic of the Congo as a yellow fever infected area, so the vaccination certificate is needed twice, once uploaded with the visa application and again at the health control counter before immigration on arrival.
  • The 19 May 2026 Cabinet decision to replace the 60-day exemption with a 30-day scheme for 54 countries and a 15-day scheme for 3 takes effect 15 days after publication in the Royal Gazette, which had not happened when this page was checked, and the new country lists have not been published. It reshapes the exemption and visa on arrival lists only. Nothing in it gives Congolese passports a visa-free route.

Frequently asked questions

Do citizens of the Republic of the Congo need a visa for Thailand?

Yes. The Republic of the Congo is not on Thailand’s visa exemption list or its visa on arrival list, so a visa must be obtained through the Thailand e-Visa portal before travelling.

Can Congolese citizens get a visa on arrival in Thailand?

No. Visa on arrival is limited to nationals of 31 listed countries and territories, and the Republic of the Congo is not one of them. Arriving without an approved e-Visa means being refused boarding or entry.

Which Thai embassy handles visa applications from the Republic of the Congo?

The Royal Thai Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria. It processes e-Visa applications from residents of the Republic of the Congo and accepts online applications only, so you select Abuja in the portal rather than visiting anywhere.

How long does a Thailand e-Visa take for Congolese applicants?

The Abuja embassy quotes 15 business days, and says some cases take four to six weeks. Apply four to six weeks ahead but not more than three months before departure.

How long can a Congolese citizen stay in Thailand on a tourist visa?

Up to 60 days on a single-entry tourist visa, which must be used to enter within three months of issue. The immigration stamp on arrival sets the actual stay.

Do Congolese travellers need a yellow fever certificate for Thailand?

Yes. The Republic of the Congo is on Thailand’s list of yellow fever infected areas, so an International Health Certificate is required with the visa application and again on arrival.

Is the Thailand Digital Arrival Card a visa?

No. The TDAC is a free online arrival form that every traveller completes within three days before arriving. It is required in addition to the e-Visa, not instead of it.
