Yes. Jamaican passport holders need a visa for Japan. Jamaica is not among the countries and regions with a visa exemption arrangement, and Jamaicans cannot use the Japan eVISA system, so a tourist needs a single-entry short-term stay visa applied for in person at the Embassy of Japan in Kingston before travelling.

Entry requirements

  • A valid Jamaican passport with at least two facing blank pages.
  • One completed and signed visa application form, and one 45mm x 35mm photograph taken within the last six months.
  • A flight itinerary showing the flight number and the dates of arrival in and departure from Japan. A ticket does not have to be bought before the visa is issued.
  • Proof you can pay for the trip: an income certificate or tax return issued by a public agency, or a bank statement or balance certificate. The embassy wants a stamped statement showing the account holder, the average balance over the last three months, the current balance and the last transaction. Screenshots are not accepted.
  • A completed Itinerary in Japan form, or hotel bookings, listing where you will stay and what you plan to do.

How to apply

Apply at the Embassy of Japan in Kingston, which handles visas for residents of Jamaica, The Bahamas and Belize. There is no online route: the Japan eVISA system only covers nationals or residents of a short list of countries, and Jamaica is not on it. Applications are submitted at the visa window without an appointment, and the embassy’s published hours are 9 am to noon and 1 pm to 4 pm, Monday to Wednesday, with visas released on Fridays only. Check the embassy’s site for the current hours before you go.

Bring the documents listed above. Everything must have been issued within the last three months, and nothing except the passport is returned, so submit copies of anything you need to keep.

Straightforward applications are decided in 5 working days from the day after receipt, roughly a week. If the embassy refers the file to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo for further examination, issuance can take more than a month, and MOFA tells applicants to apply well in advance for that reason.

The fee is paid only if the visa is issued. Since 1 July 2026 it is approximately 15,000 yen for a single-entry visa and approximately 30,000 yen for a multiple-entry visa, collected in local currency, so the Jamaican dollar amount moves with the exchange rate.

Good to know

  • The fee roughly quintupled on 1 July 2026. Japan amended the Cabinet Order on consular fees, and the old 3,000 yen single-entry figure still appears on many pages and older embassy notices. Budget on about 15,000 yen, and expect the Jamaican dollar figure at the window to be whatever that converts to that month.
  • Do not be misled by the eVISA. Japan eVISA exists and is genuinely an online visa, but it is only open to nationals or residents of Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, the UK and the US, plus a handful of Asian and Gulf countries through accredited agencies. A Jamaican applying from Jamaica has to use the sticker visa, and sites offering a "Japan e-visa for Jamaicans" are not official.
  • Bahamians and Barbadians are visa-exempt and Jamaicans are not, which confuses people travelling from Kingston on mixed-passport trips. The Kingston embassy also serves The Bahamas, and its own page says Bahamian tourists need no visa, so do not assume a Caribbean neighbour’s experience applies to you.
  • MOFA does not give reasons for a refusal, and the bank statement is where tourist applications most often fall down. The embassy asks for the average balance over three months and the bank’s stamp, not a printout from an app, and it will not accept screenshots.
  • A short-term stay visa does not allow any paid activity in Japan. The MOFA checklist says this in its first line, and it applies to remote work for a Jamaican employer just as much as to a job in Japan.
