Short Day Trips and Getaways from India's Big Cities

A day trip is a time budget, not a destination. Here is what actually works as a day out from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai, with real drive times, when to leave, and what is shut when you get there.

Short Day Trips and Getaways from India's Big Cities
Quick answer

The rule that decides a day trip is three hours each way. Under that and you get real time at the other end; over it and you have booked a driving holiday. From Delhi that means Agra or Jaipur, both now well under three hours on the expressways. From Mumbai, Alibaug by ferry or Matheran. From Bangalore, Nandi Hills or Mysore. From Hyderabad, Bhongir Fort. From Chennai, Mahabalipuram. Leave before 6am for all of them.

Most lists of day trips are lists of places. That is the wrong unit. What decides whether a day trip works is not how nice the destination is, it is how many hours you spend in a car, and almost every list quietly ignores the return leg.

So start with the arithmetic.

The three-hour rule

Three hours each way is the line. Under it, a day trip gives you five or six useful hours at the other end. Over it, you have spent more of the day travelling than arriving, and you will come home too tired to have enjoyed it.

Two things people get wrong:

  • Google's estimate is the best case, not the average. It usually assumes a clean run. Add a third on a Saturday morning and half again if you are leaving a big city after 7am.
  • The return is worse than the outbound. Everybody leaves at the same time. A 2.5 hour drive out on a Sunday morning is regularly a 4 hour drive back on a Sunday evening.

The practical version: leave before 6am, and start home before 4pm. Almost every trip on this page works if you do that and fails if you do not.

Day trips from Delhi

Agra

The obvious one, and it is genuinely a day trip now: roughly 230 km on the Yamuna Expressway, around three hours if you leave early.

The critical detail: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. It opens about half an hour before sunrise and closes about half an hour before sunset, which is why the early start is worth it twice over. You get the light and you beat the crowd.

If you want night viewing, that is a different plan entirely. It runs on only five nights a month, the full moon and the two nights either side, never on a Friday, from 8:30pm to 12:30am. It is capped at 400 people a night in eight batches of 50, each getting 30 minutes, and tickets must be bought 24 hours ahead in person from the ASI office in Agra. That is not a day trip. That is an overnight.

The Taj Mahal in Agra

Jaipur

Jaipur stopped being an overnight and became a long day out, and most people have not updated.

The Delhi to Jaipur run on the expressway link is now about 240 km in two and a half to three hours, against five to six hours on the old 270 km highway route. That changes the maths completely: leave at 5am and you are there before 8, with a full day before you drive back.

Pick two things and do them properly. Trying to fit Amber Fort, the City Palace, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar into one day is how people end up seeing four car parks.

Neemrana and the Aravalli side

If you want the drive rather than the destination, the Alwar direction gives you hills, forts and far fewer people than either Agra or Jaipur, at a shorter distance than both.

Day trips from Mumbai

Alibaug, by sea rather than road

The road route is long and the ferry is the entire point.

From the Gateway of India, catamarans to Mandwa take 45 to 60 minutes, running roughly 6am to 6pm every half hour to an hour, with the ticket often including the bus onward to Alibaug. A private speedboat does it in 20 to 30 minutes. If you want your own car at the other end, the M2M RoRo from Bhaucha Dhakka takes about an hour and carries vehicles, from around ₹300 a person plus ₹800 for the car.

Sea conditions cancel sailings in the monsoon. Check before you leave the house, not when you reach the jetty.

A coastal road

Matheran

About 100 km out, and the only hill station in Asia where cars are banned outright.

That ban is the character of the place and the thing to plan around. Vehicles stop at Dasturi Naka and go no further. From there you walk, take a horse, a hand-pulled rickshaw, or an e-rickshaw at about ₹35 a seat, running from 7:30am to 10pm. Wear shoes you can walk several kilometres in on red earth, and accept that everything will be dusty.

Lonavala and Khandala

The default, at roughly 80 to 90 km, and the honest advice is to go on a weekday or not at all. On a monsoon weekend the expressway becomes a car park and you will spend the day in it.

Day trips from Bangalore

Nandi Hills

60 to 70 km, an hour and a half to two hours, and it is a sunrise trip or it is nothing.

The gates open at 6am and the hill closes at 6pm, so to be up there for sunrise you are leaving Bangalore at 4 to 4:30am. That sounds brutal and it is the whole experience: the cloud sits below you and burns off as the sun comes up. Arrive at 9am instead and you have driven two hours to look at a viewpoint with a queue.

Four wheelers can go to the top. There is a nominal entry fee and a battery car from the two-wheeler parking if you would rather not walk the last stretch.

A winding road through green hills

Mysore

Around 145 km and comfortably inside the three-hour line on the expressway. The palace alone justifies the drive, and unlike most day trips on this list it works as a proper unhurried day rather than a dash.

Skandagiri and Ramanagara

For a trek rather than a viewpoint. Both are close enough to be back by lunch if you start in the dark, which is the point of them.

Day trips from Hyderabad

Bhongir Fort

About 54 km, an hour to an hour and a half, which makes it the easiest real day trip from any of these five cities.

It is a 12th century fort built on a single enormous rock, and the climb is short, steep and worth it. Go early in the day: the rock has no shade and it holds heat.

Ananthagiri Hills

Roughly 79 km towards Vikarabad, two to three hours depending on where in Hyderabad you start. Forest, coffee, cooler air, and the most scenic direction out of the city. Better in and just after the monsoon than in high summer.

Nagarjuna Sagar

Further out and honestly at the edge of the rule. Doable in a day if you leave very early, better as an overnight.

Day trips from Chennai

Mahabalipuram

About 55 km down the East Coast Road, which is both the shortest and the best drive on this page. The Shore Temple and the rock-cut monuments are UNESCO-listed and you can see the main cluster properly in 30 to 60 minutes, which leaves the rest of the day for the beach.

This is the rare day trip that is genuinely relaxed. Leave at 7am and you are not rushing anything.

Cars on a tree-lined road

Pondicherry

150 to 160 km on the ECR, two and a half to three and a half hours without stops. Add a stop at Mahabalipuram and it is four to five hours each way, which takes it out of day-trip range and into an overnight.

Do it as a day trip only if you skip Mahabalipuram and start before 6am. Do it as an overnight if you want to enjoy either.

Pulicat and Vedanthangal

For birds rather than buildings, and both are short enough to be back for lunch. Vedanthangal is seasonal, so check before you drive.

When to leave, and when not to go

  • Leave before 6am. Not 7. The difference between a 5:30 and a 7:30 departure out of Delhi, Bangalore or Mumbai is often ninety minutes of your day.
  • Start home before 4pm. Sunday evening traffic into every one of these cities is worse than the outbound was.
  • Avoid long weekends for anything within 150 km of a big city. The place will be fine. The road will not.
  • In the monsoon, check the ferry and the ghat road rather than the weather app. Sailings get cancelled and hill roads get closed independently of whether it is raining where you are.

What to check before you go

The most common way a day trip fails is not traffic. It is arriving to find the thing shut.

  • The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. This catches people every week.
  • Many museums close on Mondays, and several state monuments have their own weekly closing day.
  • Forts and hill viewpoints have gate hours, not opening hours. Nandi Hills shuts at 6pm regardless of the light.
  • Bird sanctuaries are seasonal. Turning up in the wrong month means an empty lake.

Ten minutes of checking the day before is worth more than any route optimisation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Delhi?

Agra if you want the Taj Mahal, at about 230 km and three hours on the Yamuna Expressway, but not on a Friday when it is closed. Jaipur is now equally viable at two and a half to three hours on the expressway link.

How far is too far for a day trip?

Three hours each way is the practical limit. Beyond that you spend more of the day travelling than at the destination, and the evening return is usually slower than the morning outbound.

What is the best day trip from Mumbai?

Alibaug by ferry, because the crossing is the point: 45 to 60 minutes from the Gateway of India to Mandwa, or about 20 to 30 by speedboat. Matheran is the alternative if you want a hill station and do not mind that no cars are allowed past Dasturi Naka.

When should I leave for Nandi Hills from Bangalore?

Between 4 and 4:30am if you want to be there for sunrise, which is the only reason to go. The gates open at 6am and the hill closes at 6pm.

Can I do Pondicherry as a day trip from Chennai?

Only just, and only if you skip Mahabalipuram on the way. It is 150 to 160 km and two and a half to three and a half hours each way on the ECR. With a Mahabalipuram stop it becomes four to five hours each way and should be an overnight.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

No. It is closed on Fridays. On other days it opens roughly half an hour before sunrise and closes half an hour before sunset. Night viewing runs on only five nights a month and needs tickets bought 24 hours in advance in person.

What is the easiest day trip from Hyderabad?

Bhongir Fort, at about 54 km and an hour to an hour and a half. It is a short steep climb up a single rock, and it works even on a late start, though the rock gets very hot.

How do I avoid traffic on a day trip?

Leave before 6am and begin the return before 4pm. Avoid long weekends entirely for anything within 150 km of a major city, and treat the mapping app's estimate as the best case rather than the expected time.
