Things to Do at Hong Kong International Airport

Hong Kong International is one of the great transit machines. It moves enormous numbers of connecting passengers with very little friction, and for a lot of long-haul routes between Europe, Australia and the rest of Asia, it is the airport you pass through rather than the one you start at. That efficiency is the point: the walk from an arriving gate to a departing one is engineered, not endured.

But it is not only a corridor. Here is what to do on a layover, and how far the city really is.

Time the Sky Bridge

The single free spectacle worth planning around opened in 2022. The Sky Bridge is a 200-metre enclosed footbridge connecting Terminal 1 to the satellite concourse, high enough for an Airbus A380 to taxi underneath it. Parts of the floor are glass panels, so you can watch aircraft pass directly below your feet.

It is a genuinely memorable few minutes and it costs nothing. If your gate is out at the satellite concourse, you may cross it anyway; if not, it can be worth the walk.

A deep bench of dining and shopping

Beyond the Sky Bridge, Hong Kong has the wide range of dining and shopping you would expect of a major hub, spread across two terminals linked by an automated people mover. Dim sum, roast meats, noodles and strong coffee are all easy to find, alongside international chains and a large duty-free offer.

Built for the tight connection

The reason Hong Kong wins its ranking is the boring, invaluable stuff: signage, transfer times and throughput. If you are connecting here, the airport is engineered to get you from one gate to another without drama, which is exactly what you want at the end of a long-haul flight with another one ahead. It is a place designed to be passed through well, and that is a compliment.

How long a layover before you leave for the city

Hong Kong is close and the approach is one of the most spectacular anywhere. The Airport Express reaches Hong Kong Station in central Victoria in 24 minutes, which is fast enough that a layover of five hours or more genuinely opens up the harbourfront.

Many nationalities get visa-free entry to Hong Kong, so check yours and go. Staying airside for a connection needs no visa; leaving does. For less than about four hours, stay in the airport and use the Sky Bridge and the food.
