Do Lao passport holders need a visa for the United Kingdom?
By Aarush Chopra · Travel Writer, Tripmojo · Updated · Reviewed by Simran Raheja
Yes. Lao citizens need a Standard Visitor visa before travelling to the United Kingdom, for any purpose including tourism and visiting family. Laos is on the UK’s visa national list, so the £20 Electronic Travel Authorisation is not an option on a Lao passport. The visa costs £135 for visits of up to six months, is applied for online at the earliest three months before travel, and a decision usually arrives within three weeks of the biometrics appointment. Unlike a Canadian application, the UK does not require a trip abroad for fingerprints: gov.uk’s centre finder lists a VFS Global visa application centre in Vientiane.

Entry requirements
- A Lao passport valid for the whole of your stay. The UK sets no six month validity rule, whatever aggregator sites say, but the visa cannot outlast the passport it sits in.
- An approved Standard Visitor visa in that passport before you board.
- Evidence you can support yourself during the visit and pay for the journey home, or that someone else, such as family in the UK, is funding it.
- Evidence of what you will do and where you will stay, plus ties to Laos, such as work, study or family, that show you will leave at the end of the visit.
How to apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa
Apply online on gov.uk and pay the £135 fee. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before the trip, and the online form is where the purpose, funding and accommodation are declared and documents uploaded.
Book and attend a biometrics appointment to give fingerprints and a photograph. For Laos that is the VFS Global centre in Vientiane listed by gov.uk’s find-a-visa-application-centre service, so the journey to Bangkok that older advice describes is no longer part of a UK application. Applicants who prefer, or who are already abroad, may choose a centre in another country instead.
Wait for the decision, usually within 3 weeks of the appointment, before booking anything non-refundable. The passport comes back with the visa vignette in it.
Regular visitors can pay more for a long-term Standard Visitor visa lasting 2, 5 or 10 years, at £506, £903 or £1,128, with each visit still capped at 6 months.
Good to know
- The ETA cannot be bought onto a Lao passport, and third party sites that offer one anyway are the scam to avoid. The UK rolled the Electronic Travel Authorisation out in 2025 for nationalities that do not need a visa, and gov.uk warns against websites that imitate government services and charge more. A Lao dual national who also holds a passport from an ETA country, common in the diaspora in the United States, France and Australia, should apply for the ETA with that other passport and travel to the UK on it, because an ETA is tied to the passport it was applied for with.
- The Bangkok reflex is out of date for UK applications. Until 2013 every Lao applicant did have to travel to Thailand to give fingerprints, and the British Embassy then ran periodic mobile visa clinics in Vientiane as a stopgap, which is why old forum answers still route people through Bangkok. Today gov.uk’s centre finder lists Laos with its own VFS Global centre in Vientiane. Note that the British Embassy Vientiane itself provides consular services to British nationals, not visa services, so book through VFS rather than turning up at the embassy on Rue Yokkabat.
- Most refusals on this route are about the return, not the paperwork. A large share of Lao applications are visits to a British partner or to family, and the rules require the officer to believe you will leave at the end of the visit. A UK sponsor is allowed to fund the whole trip, gov.uk says so explicitly, but their money does not answer the return question: your own job, land, business or family in Laos does. Answer every question truthfully, because false representations or hiding a relationship is a refusal ground in its own right and can carry a 10 year ban for deception.
- A visit of under six months needs no TB certificate, so ignore checklists that demand one for a holiday. Laos is on the UK’s tuberculosis test list, but the test applies to people coming for 6 months or more, such as students and settlement applicants, who must use a Home Office approved clinic. Gov.uk publishes the approved clinic list for Laos, so a longer move does not require testing abroad.
Frequently asked questions
Do Lao citizens need a visa for the UK?
Yes. Laos is on the UK visa national list, so a Standard Visitor visa is required before travel for any purpose, including tourism and visiting family or friends.
Can Lao passport holders get a UK ETA instead of a visa?
No. The Electronic Travel Authorisation is only for nationalities that do not need a visa, so it cannot be issued on a Lao passport. Dual nationals can use an ETA on their other passport if that country qualifies.
How much does a UK visa cost for Lao citizens?
£135 for a Standard Visitor visa of up to 6 months. Long-term visas for regular visitors cost £506 for 2 years, £903 for 5 years and £1,128 for 10 years, still with a 6 month limit per visit.
How long does a UK visa take from Laos?
Usually up to 3 weeks after the biometrics appointment, which is the UK’s published standard for Standard Visitor applications made outside the UK. Apply up to 3 months before travel.
Where do Lao applicants give biometrics for a UK visa?
At the VFS Global UK visa application centre in Vientiane, which gov.uk’s centre finder lists for Laos. You may also choose a centre in another country when you apply, but you no longer have to.
Do Lao citizens need a visa to transit the UK?
Not for an airside connection: gov.uk’s checker says a Lao national who stays airside needs no visa. Passing through UK border control needs a Visitor in Transit visa (£74.50, leave within 48 hours), unless you qualify to transit visa-free, for example with a valid visa for the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand and an onward flight by 23:59 the day after arrival.
Does a Lao passport need 6 months validity for the UK?
No. Gov.uk asks only that the passport be valid for the whole of your stay. Sites quoting a six month minimum are repeating a rule the UK does not have.
What happens if a Lao visitor overstays in the UK?
Overstaying is a breach of immigration law that future applications are refused for. Leaving voluntarily at your own expense brings a 12 month refusal period, removal at public expense brings up to 10 years, though an overstay of 30 days or less followed by a voluntary departure is disregarded.
