Two Hoysala temple towns sixteen kilometres apart, carved in soapstone so fine the bracelets on the sculptures turn. A UNESCO-listed pair best seen in one unhurried day.
Just 16 km apart, these twin Hoysala capitals feature soapstone carvings so fine that stone bracelets still rotate in their sockets. Belur's 1117 CE Chennakeshava Temple remains an active place of worship, while Halebidu was sacked twice in the 14th century and never rebuilt. Top off your trip with Shravanabelagola's colossal monolithic statue.

Enjoy smooth four-lane cruising most of the way to Hassan, followed by a quick, easy run out to Belur.

When to go
The absolute sweet spot. Exploring temple perimeters and climbing 600 barefoot steps is far nicer in cool weather.
The Malnad countryside explodes in lush green and damp soapstone glistens, though steps can get slick.
Vindhyagiri's sunbaked stone makes the climb tough. Hit the steps at dawn opening or pass on it.
Good to know
- Both heritage sites are managed by the ASI with nominal tickets; hiring a guide at the gate brings the stones alive way beyond their fee.
- Belur is an active place of worship: dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), take shoes off, and respect photo limits inside the sanctum.
- Shravanabelagola sits virtually right on the highway back, so you spend a fun morning rather than making a major detour.
- The grand Mahamastakabhisheka anointing ritual takes place roughly every 12 years and brings huge crowds, so double-check dates before booking.
