Weekend getaway from Bengaluru · #1 of 10

Nandi Hills

A fortified hilltop an hour north of the city, famous for a sea-of-clouds sunrise, Tipu Sultan's summer palace and a 9th-century Nandi temple at the base. Go early - the gate queues build fast.

Nandi Hills

The ultimate Bengaluru sunrise ritual: split early while the city sleeps, scale 1478 metres, and float above a blanket of clouds before the crowds roll in. It is a day trip, not an overnight - you will be back home by lunch unless you linger for the base temples.

Getting there

The direct run1.5 hr
NH44 via Devanahalli

Four-lane highway most of the way past the airport, followed by 40 hairpin bends up the hill. Leave by 4:30 AM to catch the sunrise.

The quieter approach2 hr
Doddaballapur Road

Slower and narrower, but skips airport traffic entirely. A far better choice for the drive back down than the morning climb.

Day 1 - Saturday

    Leave Bengaluru

Cruise out on NH44 past the airport. The road is blissfully empty at this hour, and the final climb takes about 25 minutes from the base.

    📍 Nandi Hills Road, Chikkaballapur

Tip · Vehicle entry closes the moment hilltop parking fills up. On a long weekend, make sure to reach the gate by 5:30 AM.

    Sunrise at Tipu's Drop

A dramatic cliff edge where the valley drops away sharply. On clear winter mornings, clouds sit below the rim and burn off within an hour.

    📍 Tipu's Drop, Nandi Hills

Tip · It gets genuinely cold up here before dawn. Bring a jacket even if you visit in April.

    7:15 AMSight

    Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple

A charming stone temple nestled inside the hilltop fort, wonderfully quiet once the sunrise crowd drifts back to the car park.

    Breakfast on the hill

The government-run canteen near the parking serves idli, vada, and piping hot filter coffee. Basic, satisfying, and the only food on the summit.

Tipu's Summer Palace and Nehru Nilaya

Explore Tipu Sultan's hilltop summer retreat and the colonial-era guest house later used by Nehru. Both are an easy, short walk from the fort.

    Walk the Amrita Sarovar loop

An easy stroll around the hilltop tank framed by forest. Fantastic for birding - the evergreen patch attracts wintering warblers and flycatchers.

    📍 Amrita Sarovar, Nandi Hills

Tip · Pack binoculars in winter. A resident pair of shaheen falcons nests right on the cliff faces.

  7. 7
    12:00 PMSight

    Bhoganandishwara Temple, Nandi village

A magnificent 9th-century temple at the foot of the hill, begun under the Nolambas and expanded later. Far older than the summit fort and usually near-empty.

    📍 Bhoganandishwara Temple, Nandi Village

Tip · This is the one stop most day-trippers skip, yet it is easily the best spot on the itinerary.

    1:30 PMFood

    Lunch in Chikkaballapur

Highway spots along the Chikkaballapur bypass serve traditional North Karnataka thalis featuring jowar roti, ennegai eggplant, and plenty of ghee.

    Drive back

Cruising back down NH44. Traffic piles up past the airport from around 5 PM on Sundays, so getting an early head start is definitely worth it.

    📍 Bengaluru, Karnataka

Where to eat

Mayura Pine Top canteen

The sole food spot on the summit - serving hot idlis, vadas, and filter coffee starting around 7 AM.

Chikkaballapur highway thalis

Authentic North Karnataka feasts on the bypass: soft jowar roti, spiced ennegai brinjal, and endless rice.

Grape juice stalls on NH44

The stretch north of the airport is wine country. Stop by roadside stalls for ice-cold, freshly pressed grape juice.

When to go

Winter (Nov-Feb)

Prime time for legendary cloud inversions and crisp sunrises. Cold enough at 5 AM that you will want a jacket.

Monsoon (Jun-Sep)

Lush, moody, and dramatic, though the view is frequently pure fog. Drive carefully as hairpin bends get slippery.

Summer (Mar-May)

A refreshing break from city heat, though haze means the iconic cloud layer rarely forms.

Good to know

  • Vehicle entry is ticketed and strictly capped. On weekends and public holidays, the gate can close as early as 6 AM.
  • Cycling up is super popular on this shared road - give riders plenty of room around hairpin bends.
  • The summit has zero gas stations and patchy cell service. Be sure to fill up your tank in Devanahalli.
  • Skandagiri, the nearby sunrise trek, requires a separate permit and is a night hike - not a simple add-on to this trip.
