Where to eat

Village mess halls, Athanavur

Unpretentious Tamil rice thalis served with fiery country chicken curry. Budget-friendly, super filling, and genuinely your best bet in town.

Hill honey and jackfruit

Grab fresh jars of wild honey and sweet jackfruit from roadside vendors across the plateau, harvested straight from orchards right below the lake.

Vaniyambadi biryani

This town at the foot of the ghat is famous for rich Arcot-style biryani. Make sure to schedule a delicious pitstop here on your ride back.

When to go

Winter (Nov-Feb)

Crisp, clear skies offer ideal hiking conditions. This is the single season where you will actually want to throw on a cozy sweater.

Summer (Mar-Jun)

Refreshing breezes keep temperatures noticeably cooler than the sizzling plains down below. Note that waterfalls usually run dry now.

Monsoon (Jul-Oct)

Lush green landscapes and misty views take over, sending waterfalls roaring. Drive carefully on slick hairpins, and note paragliding pauses.

Good to know

  • Remember this is a sleepy hill escape, not a mega-resort - don't expect bustling nightlife, endless ATMs, or late-night dining.
  • Treat paragliding as an exciting bonus rather than your trip's sole purpose, since flights get cancelled often due to wind.
  • Drive cautiously! The ghat road lacks streetlights and edge barriers on multiple bends, so avoid navigating it after dark.
  • Since Yelagiri is located in Tamil Nadu, bring valid photo IDs for hotel check-in and expect to hear Tamil spoken instead of Kannada.
