Weekend getaway from Chandigarh · #5 of 10
Amritsar
Sikhism's holiest city: the Golden Temple and its vast free langar, Jallianwala Bagh, the Wagah border ceremony and the best kulcha-chhole in Punjab. The longest haul on this list, so plan a full two days.

Get set for an unforgettable 48 hours of soulful sights and serious feasts. We're hitting the Golden Temple by day and glowing at night, sharing langar in the world's biggest free kitchen, soaking in history at Jallianwala Bagh, visiting Durgiana Temple, and catching the electric Wagah border face-off. All fueled by flaky Amritsari kulchas and thick lassi. Start early from Chandigarh - it's a solid 230 km haul!
Getting there
It's about 230 km door to door. GT Road toll plazas can back up on holiday weekends, so budget a little extra buffer time.
Daily direct trains take roughly 4-5 hours and save you highway fatigue. Once you pull in, hop on an auto or e-rickshaw straight to the walled city.

Cruise down the historic GT Road via Ludhiana and Jalandhar straight into the old town. Ditch your wheels at the multi-level parking lot near the temple complex, then explore on foot.
Tip · Trust us, do not try navigating the inner-city lanes by car - narrow alleys are strictly rickshaw and walking territory.

Where to eat
Crispy, tandoor-baked flatbread stuffed with spiced potato and onion, crushed with a slab of butter, and served alongside tangy pindi chhole.
Simmered overnight in pure desi ghee at a legendary 100-year-old old-city spot; pair it with flaky paranthas and a cool glass of lassi.
Sharing a warm, simple vegetarian meal sitting cross-legged alongside thousands of fellow pilgrims is Amritsar's most humble and unforgettable ritual.
Whipped thick and sweet, poured into tall glasses, and crowned with a dollop of fresh clotted cream (malai) - literally dessert for breakfast.
When to go
Crisp, pleasant days make this the prime time for wandering. Note that Dec-Jan mornings bring thick GT Road fog, so delay your morning drive until visibility clears.
Scorching temperatures can touch 45 C. Schedule your temple visits around dawn and twilight, stay hydrated, and dress lightly for Wagah's unshaded bleachers.
Expect humid air and sudden showers. The Golden Temple's marble parikrama can get quite slick when wet, so watch your footing.
Good to know
- Dress respectfully (cover your legs and shoulders) and keep a scarf handy at all times - head coverings are strictly required across the temple complex.
- Bring your original photo ID for Wagah Border security, and pack light since bags and backpacks aren't permitted inside the stadium.
- The old walled city is a maze best explored on foot or via electric rickshaws; stash your car at the parking lot and leave it there all weekend.
