Skip the standard weekend plans and head 150 km south of Delhi to Krishna's playground. Mathura, his holy riverside birthplace on the Yamuna, and Vrindavan, its temple-packed twin 12 km away, make the ultimate day trip. You will feast on spicy kachoris, explore the sacred Janmabhoomi complex, catch the electric energy of Banke Bihari, and watch Prem Mandir light up after dark.
Getting there
Your best bet for speed. It is a tolled highway running east of the city, so it is super fast, but keep an eye out for speed cameras and thick winter fog.
It is roughly 150 km but slower due to local town bottlenecks. Pick this if you are craving authentic highway dhaba food. Otherwise, hop on a train from Delhi to Mathura Junction; it takes just 2-3 hours.

Prem Mandir illumination
This modern white-marble marvel on Raman Reti really comes alive at night. The entire temple glows with shifting colors, and there is a brilliant musical fountain show in the gardens.

Tip · Aim to arrive right at dusk so you can see the marble transition from day to glowing night. The fountain show wraps up by 7:30 PM in winter and 8 PM in summer.

Drive back to Delhi
Refuel with a quick dinner near ISKCON, then hit the expressway for the smooth cruise back. You will be back in Delhi by 11 PM, tired but with a very full heart.
Tip · Top up your gas tank before entering the expressway. Services are pretty sparse once you are on the highway late at night.
Where to eat
Mathura's ultimate sweet treat. These rich, caramelized milk fudges are best bought at Brijwasi Mithai Wala at Holi Gate, though they have shops all over.
The breakfast of champions in these parts. Crisp, spicy, and served with sweet, syrup-soaked jalebis. Oma Pahalwan gets busy early, but it is worth it.
Super refreshing yogurt drinks served in traditional clay pots. Head to Shankar Mithai Wala to sip a cold lassi alongside a plate of hot puri-kachori.

When to go
The golden window for walking around without melting, though expect some serious winter fog on the morning drive.
Absolutely wild and unforgettable. Go if you love high-energy festivals, but brace yourself for over 100,000 visitors during the post-Holi Brahmotsava fair.
It gets scorching hot. Temples close for long midday naps, so mimic the locals: do Mathura at the crack of dawn and Vrindavan after the sun starts dipping.
The grandest celebration of the year for Krishna's birthday. It is incredibly festive, but the town is packed to the gills and roads completely gridlock.
Good to know
- Vrindavan's monkeys are expert pickpockets. They love stealing glasses and phones, so wear contacts if you can and keep your stuff zipped up!
- Steer clear of pushy, self-appointed guides who try to drag you to specific temples for big 'donations'. Explore at your own pace and feel free to walk away.
- Every temple is free to enter, but keep some loose change handy for the shoe minders. Also, always double-check the camera rules before snapping photos inside.
- No phones or cameras are allowed inside the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex. Store them in the lockers outside and enjoy a brief digital detox.
