Bakkhali

Digha's quiet neighbor on the Sundarbans' fringe is a dream. Walk the 8 km hard-sand stretch to twin town Fraserganj, climb the Henry Island watchtower, and catch a country boat to uninhabited Jambudwip. It is wonderfully low-key.

Where to eat

Rui and fish thalis

Feast on rustic rice-hotel thalis loaded with fresh rui, katla, hilsa, pomfret, or prawns. They are incredibly cheap and hit the spot.

Cook-to-order sea catch

Snag fresh fish or crabs from the market and let a local cook prep it for a tiny fee. Just give them a heads-up early!

Green coconut water

Grab a chilled, fresh coconut right on the beach. It is the ultimate refresher under the afternoon sun.

When to go

October to March

The sweet spot. Perfect, breezy beach weather and calm waters for the Jambudwip crossing, but expect more fellow travelers.

April to June

Steamy and humid. If you are heading out to Jambudwip, make sure to set sail early in the morning to beat the heat.

July to September

Monsoon brings dramatic skies, but the choppy seas can shut down the boats to Jambudwip. Always ask locals before planning a crossing.

Good to know

  • Keep plenty of cash handy. The lone ATM near the bus stand is notoriously unreliable and cards are rarely welcome.
  • Plan your meals ahead! Call local spots a few hours before you want to eat, since they cook fresh and do not keep set menus.
  • Veggie options are pretty scarce, particularly on Henry Island. Seafood lovers will have a much easier time here.
  • That boat ride to Jambudwip is no joke. The open waters get very choppy, so skip it if you get seasick easily.
