Bishnupur was the citadel of the Malla kings, and eight hundred years of temple building left it the terracotta capital of Bengal. A weekend here is a walk through brick-carved epics at Rasmancha and the Jorbangla temple, a stop at the giant Dalmadal cannon, and an afternoon buying Baluchari sarees and terracotta horses straight from the makers.
Getting there
About 201 km; reserve seats ahead, especially for weekend and festival travel. A Howrah-Chakradharpur passenger with sleeper class also runs late at night.
About 150 km of driving; buses run the same route from Kolkata's Esplanade in 4-5 hours if you'd rather not drive.

Rasmancha

Cool, dry weather is ideal for walking between the temple clusters and for the side trip to Panchmura.
Hot afternoons; plan temple visits for morning and late afternoon and rest at midday.
Monsoon greens up the countryside but can make the Panchmura village road muddy; check conditions ahead.
