Getting there
Super cheap, but skip the chaotic rush-hour crush. A mid-morning departure lets you snag a seat and travel in peace.
It is roughly 37 km. Splurging 1,000-2,000 rupees on a cab makes sense if you want to hit neighboring Serampore or Hugli-Chinsurah on the same day.

Follow your nose to Burrabazar near the Municipal Corporation building for some of the best, crispiest fish fry in town.
Sweet tooth still calling? Wander the legendary shops in Panchanantala and Baghbazar for amazing lyangcha and sandesh.
When to go
Perfect whenever you need an escape! Indoor museums, historic churches, and breezy walks make this a solid bet year-round.
The town explodes in gorgeous lights and pandals for Jagaddhatri Puja. It is breathtaking but insanely packed, so take the train and keep it to a day trip.

- Keep it to a day trip; decent hotels are hard to find here, and you can easily see the best of it in a day.
- Don't get locked out! The Dupleix Palace museum closes its doors on Thursdays and Saturdays.
- Hop on the shared autorickshaws between Chandannagar and Mankundu stations - they are cheap and run on fixed routes.
- Leave the car behind in November. Jagaddhatri Puja traffic is a nightmare; the local train is your best friend here.
