Weekend getaway from Kolkata · #3 of 10
Sundarbans
The world's largest mangrove delta and home of the Royal Bengal tiger. Cruise the creeks between Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki watchtowers, sleep at an island lodge and feast on fresh crab. Closed 23 June yearly.

Welcome to the world's grandest mangrove maze, where tigers actually swim and hunt along the shore. Swap streets for winding waterways: hop between watchtowers, scan for stripes, and fall asleep to the river's low hum.
Getting there
It is about 82-95 km by road to the jetty. Go for a package deal: most lodges will bundle your road trip and boat connection into one smooth ride.
Great for budget travelers. Canning is the closest station, but you will still need an auto and a boat to get into the wild, so a package is much easier.
Day 1 - Into the mangroves
Jump on your boat, get your permits sorted, and start cruising through the heart of tiger country- 16:00 AMDrive
Drive from Kolkata to Godkhali
Rise early and hit the Diamond Harbour road toward Canning and Basanti. Watch the highway shrink to rustic village lanes right before Godkhali Ghat appears.
📍 Godkhali Ferry Ghat, Gosaba
Tip · Lock in a package tour or lodge transfer ahead of time. Weekend local buses down here are notoriously flaky.

Sudhanyakhali watchtower
This tower is your best shot at spotting a tiger: it overlooks a busy waterhole and mudflat. Even if the big cats hide, expect plenty of deer and crocs.
📍 Sudhanyakhali Watchtower, Sundarbans
Tip · Quiet down as you get close: they cut the boat engines on approach, and silence is key to not scaring the animals away.

Dobanki watchtower and canopy walk
Stroll through a protected, caged walkway high up in the treetops leading to the tower. It gives you a cool bird's-eye view of the mangrove forest below.

Sunset cruise back to the lodge
Watch the massive rivers turn to liquid gold as the sun dips. Keep a camera ready for rare river dolphins surfacing as we drift toward the lodge.

Wind down at a cozy riverside spot near Sajnekhali or Gosaba. Dinner is a simple, tasty buffet with plenty of veg options before the river lulls you to sleep.

Board the return boat and drive to Kolkata
We will hop off the boat at Godkhali and climb back into the car. Expect to arrive back in Kolkata after the sun goes down.
📍 Godkhali Ferry Ghat, Gosaba
Tip · Avoid visiting during the rough monsoon months or right around the annual June 23 tourism break when the park shuts down completely.
Where to eat
This is the quintessential delta meal: fresh-caught seafood tossed in spicy mustard oil and simmered to perfection.
The rivers are packed with local fish like hilsa, bhetki, rohu, and katla. Most lodges will gladly whip up the morning's catch for you.
End your evening meals with sweet, creamy local treats and fresh cottage cheese sourced right from the lodge's own garden patch.
Since plastic is banned in the reserve, this is your safest and most refreshing drink option. Just make sure it is cracked open fresh for you.
When to go
Expect cool, crisp days and top-tier animal spotting. This is prime travel time, so book your boat and lodge well in advance.
It gets pretty warm and muggy, but you will beat the crowds. Aim for early morning boat trips before the midday sun kicks in.
The rains make the rivers choppy and spotty for wildlife. Keep in mind the park shuts down entirely on June 23 for a conservation day.
Good to know
- This beautiful delta is a strictly plastic-free zone. Pack a reusable bottle and make sure to take all your trash back with you.
- Stick to licensed, green tour operators or the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation instead of risking sketchy, unregistered boat hires.
- No swimming: these rivers are home to hungry saltwater crocodiles and bull sharks, so keep your feet firmly on the boat.
- Bring plenty of clean drinking water and strong mosquito repellent, especially if you are visiting during the humid rainy season.
