Weekend getaway from Mumbai · #9 of 10
Bhandardara
A quiet lake district under Maharashtra's highest peaks: camping on Arthur Lake's shore, Randha Falls in spate during the rains, firefly season before the monsoon and clear stargazing skies in winter.

Trade Mumbai's chaos for Bhandardara, a gorgeous lakeside pocket tucked beneath Maharashtra's tallest peaks. Spend your weekend boating on Arthur Lake, watching Wilson Dam's Umbrella Falls and Randha Falls roar, and trekking to Ratanwadi's ancient Shiva temple. Don't forget stargazing under clear winter skies on this easy two-day loop.
Getting there
Once you exit the highway at Ghoti, the road narrows to two lanes through quiet farms. Hit the road early and top up your fuel tank to keep things breezy.
Totally doable, but remember there is zero public transit from the stations. You will want to pre-book a cab for the entire weekend to avoid getting stranded.

Where to eat
Standalone restaurants are rare here. Most travelers eat right at their camp or resort, enjoying home-style, spiced Maharashtrian thalis.
Monsoon treats! Grab hot, roasted corn on the cob (bhutta) and crispy onion bhajiyas paired with cutting chai near the dam and waterfalls.
If you are trekking around Ratanwadi, local village homes serve up simple, freshly cooked rural thalis to hungry hikers (just ask in advance).
When to go
The hills explode in neon green and the waterfalls roar at full power. Keep in mind that trails get slippery, and resorts book out fast.
Catch the magical firefly festival! Right before the rains, thousands of fireflies light up the forest. Try to time it with a moonless night.
Crisp, chilly nights and cloudless skies make this the absolute sweet spot for pitching a lakeside tent, stargazing, and hiking Kalsubai.
Daytime gets pretty warm. Beat the heat by exploring temples and trails early in the morning, and spend your afternoons splashing in the lake or pool.
Good to know
- Since Randha and Umbrella Falls rely on dam releases, they can dry to a trickle outside the monsoon. Check with your stay before heading out.
- Getting around Bhandardara without your own wheels is tough since public transit is non-existent. Hire a cab for the whole weekend if you arrive by train.
- The hike to Ratangad fort features some steep sections and a vertical iron ladder near the peak. Skip it if you are not used to trekking.
- Winter weekends are incredibly popular for stargazing and lakeside camping. Secure your spot well in advance to avoid missing out.
