Weekend getaway from Mumbai · #6 of 10
Igatpuri
A monsoon-drenched hill town on the Mumbai-Agra highway with some of the Sahyadris' highest peaks, waterfall and fort treks, and quiet resorts for a slow weekend. At its greenest June to September.

Perched right atop Kasara Ghat on the Mumbai-Agra highway, Igatpuri is a monsoon wonderland of misty peaks and roaring waterfalls. Base yourself at a resort, soak in valley views, then tackle a fort trek and waterfall rappel.
Getting there
Trust me, you will want a car once you arrive: private vehicles are effectively the only way to reach the scattered forts, dams, and waterfalls around town.
If you arrive by train, pre-arrange a local cab for the weekend. The spots are scattered 10-17 km apart and there is no useful public transport between them.

Chase misty valley views on your way up, then settle into that laid-back monsoon rhythm- 17:00 AMDrive

Drive back to Mumbai
Wind your way back down Kasara Ghat as the golden hour sets in. Stop at the very top for hot, roasted corn-on-the-cob and fresh bhajiya to wrap up the trip.
📍 Igatpuri, Maharashtra
Tip · Sunday evening traffic heading downhill gets crazy after 6 PM. Start driving by 5 PM to keep the journey smooth and stress-free.
Where to eat
Most resorts serve up delicious, home-style buffet spreads or local thalis. Since great standalone restaurants are rare here, eating in-house is your best bet.
This busy stretch of highway near town is lined with dhabas serving up fantastic, budget-friendly thalis, smoky tandoori dishes, and late-night cutting chai.
Snacking on piping-hot bhutta and crispy onion bhajiyas with hot chai at the windy ghat viewpoints is the ultimate monsoon ritual here.
When to go
The main event! Expect heavy downpours, waterfalls roaring at full volume, and hills of bright, electric green. Pack good rain gear and sturdy, grippy shoes.
Clear skies and chilly weather make this the perfect season for hiking up to Tringalwadi. Make sure to pack warm layers, as nights get genuinely cold.
Days get seriously hot. If you visit now, start your treks at the crack of dawn and plan to spend the afternoon cooling off in your resort pool.
Good to know
- You will definitely need your own wheels: spots are scattered 10-17 km apart, and public transit here isn't an option.
- Don't leave things to the last minute! Monsoon-weekend resorts and Vihigaon rappelling slots get booked out way in advance.
- Leave the sandals at home. Waterfall rocks and fort trails are incredibly slippery in the rain; wear proper shoes and keep your phone in a dry bag.
- Remember, Dhamma Giri is a working meditation sanctuary, not a tourist attraction. Visit the Myanmar Gate quietly and respect the silence.
