Welcome to India's ultimate berry country! Mahabaleshwar and sister town Panchgani grow about 85 percent of the country's strawberries, all spread across high plateaus with British-era viewpoints overlooking the gorgeous Krishna valley. It is the perfect two-day road trip from Mumbai, packed with decadent strawberry-and-cream treats, boat rides on Venna Lake, walks on Panchgani's Table Land, and a climb up the historic Pratapgad hill fort.
Getting there
It adds about 40 km compared to the ghat route, but it is straighter, faster, and lets you cruise right through Panchgani on your way in.
Shorter in distance, but expect a slower, twistier drive. Go this way one-off to soak in the gorgeous scenery, but only if you don't get carsick!
Day 1 - Panchgani, Mapro and Venna Lake

Drive out via the expressway
Roll out of Mumbai at dawn to beat the rush. You will reach Panchgani by late morning, but stop for a quick breakfast at an expressway food court first to keep on track.

Table Land, Panchgani
Stand on one of Asia's largest plateaus, 4,500 ft up. This laterite wonderland offers sweeping views over five hills and the Krishna valley, plus horse rides along the rim.

Strawberry stalls on the Panchgani road
From roughly October to May, the Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar road is lined with farm stalls selling boxed strawberries and mulberries. Some spots even let you pick your own!

Boating on Venna Lake
Paddle or row across this beautiful tree-ringed lake. Afterwards, hang out on the shore for pony rides and delicious corn-and-bhel stalls.

Day 2 - Sunrise points and Pratapgad fort

Set an alarm for the town's best sunrise. At 1,439 m, this plateau-top platform features three watchtowers and stunning views. Kate's Point is another great option.

The majestic 'queen of points' hangs right over Savitri gorge. Park at Savitri Point to walk the ridge past Castle Rock to Arthur's Seat, then check out Elephant's Head's nearby needle-eye rock.

Tip · Parking gets pretty tight at this dead-end during peak season. Get here early, and be prepared for a short 300 m walk to the viewpoints.

Get a bird's-eye view of Dhom dam's blue waters and the winding Krishna river from a 1,473 m ledge. There is plenty of parking and roasted bhutta stalls at the gate.

Drive to Pratapgad and lunch below the fort
Drive 24 km west toward the 1659 battleground fort. Be sure to fuel up at the simple thali joints clustered around the base before you begin the climb.

Climb Shivaji's hilltop citadel, part of the UNESCO Maratha Military Landscapes. Explore twin gates, bastions, and temples on your way to the summit statue and its epic valley views.

Strawberry cream and shopping for the road
Treat yourself to one last signature strawberry cream, then fill your trunk with Mapro crushes, jams, chikki, and strawberry wine before pointing the car home.

Tip · Make sure to hit the road by 5 PM - it is a solid five-hour-plus drive back home to Mumbai.
Where to eat
The ultimate local treat! Imagine fresh, juicy strawberries topped with thick whipped cream and strawberry ice cream. You will find it everywhere from fancy cafes to roadside stalls for around Rs 160.
Run by the local fruit brand, this beautiful garden cafe serves up great wood-fired pizzas, hearty sandwiches, and has a store stocked with every berry product you can think of.
From October-November right up to April-May, the Panchgani road turns into a berry corridor. Locals swear by the delicious 'Sweet Charlie' variety from the main bazaar.
Another must-try local snack! Grab a warm, freshly roasted portion of chickpeas scooped into handy paper cones as you wander the pedestrian market.
When to go
Prime strawberry season! Expect cool, clear weather perfect for exploring viewpoints, with the sweetest harvest peaking between December and April.
One of Maharashtra's rainiest corners! The hills turn incredibly green with roaring waterfalls, but the valley views get lost in the mist and paddle boating is paused.
Chilly winter mornings bring the most spectacular sunrises of the year. It gets very busy on weekends, so make sure to book your rooms well in advance!
Time for Mapro's big strawberry festival! The garden comes alive with free tastings and live food stalls. Keep an eye out as dates change every year.
Good to know
- Keep an eye on municipal entry fees (around Rs 50 per person and per car, valid for a week) collected at the town entry gates. Always count your tickets before driving off!
- With roughly 25 named viewpoints, many of them offer similar views. Save time by focusing on the absolute best: Wilson, Kate's, Arthur's Seat, and a single sunset point.
- Public restrooms are extremely hard to find at the viewpoints. Your best bet is to plan your breaks around Mapro Garden or your hotel.
- Don't have a car? No worries! MSRTC buses run directly from Mumbai, and you can book a cheap local Darshan bus tour to see 11 major points and Pratapgad.
