Weekend getaway from Mumbai · #3 of 10
Matheran
India's smallest hill station and fully vehicle-free: reach it by the Neral toy train, then wander red-earth trails between lookout points, Charlotte Lake and the bazaar on foot, horseback or hand-pulled rickshaw.

Imagine a forest hill town with absolutely no cars. Welcome to Matheran, India's only vehicle-free retreat where red-mud trails, horses, and quiet walking paths rule. Chug up on the toy train, then explore cliffs, lakes, and local markets.
Getting there
This cute heritage train chugs up the hill four times a day. It takes about two scenic hours, but breaks down or pauses in the monsoon - so keep a shared taxi fallback ready!
Vehicles must park at Dasturi. From there, hop on a horse, hire a hand-pulled rickshaw, or walk 40 minutes into town. Shared cabs from Neral cost roughly Rs 100 per seat.

Toy train or walk down to Neral
Catch the toy train back down, or enjoy a scenic one-hour walk through the trees from Dasturi to Neral before hopping on the Mumbai train.
📍 Dasturi Point, Matheran
Tip · There is no direct evening express back to Mumbai, but local trains running via Karjat or straight to the city are very easy to catch.
Where to eat
The tea stalls along the market street are great for people watching. If you are out hiking, keep an eye out for hidden forest stalls serving hot cutting chai.
Most hotels here offer packages with delicious, home-style thalis. It is super convenient since the town winds down early in the evening.
Matheran is famous for its sweet chikki and fudge. Grab a few boxes from the bazaar on your last day so they stay fresh for the journey home.
When to go
Matheran is at its absolute prime right after the rains. The forest is vibrant green, waterfalls are active, and the evenings are crisp and cool.
Expect gorgeous misty views, but the toy train usually takes a break and the red clay trails get slippery. Bring sturdy boots and an umbrella!
Days are warm, but the thick forest cover keeps the hiking trails shaded and pleasant. Plus, you will find much better hotel deals during the week.
Good to know
- Leave the wheels behind! Since cars are banned past Dasturi, you'll be walking, riding horses, or using rickshaws. Pack light.
- Want to save serious cash? Avoid the weekend rush and visit Sunday through Monday, when hotel room rates plummet.
- Always agree on horse or rickshaw rates before you jump on. Far-off spots like Panorama Point will cost a bit extra.
- Ignore the pushy hotel touts waiting at Neral station. Head straight into town to check out rooms and prices in person first.
