Weekend getaway from Mysuru · #2 of 10
Ooty
The 'Queen of hill stations' at 2,240 m in the Nilgiris, 125 km from Mysuru across Bandipur forest. Botanical gardens, lakes and the UNESCO-listed toy train. Note: the forest highway shuts to traffic 9 PM-6 AM.

The ultimate Nilgiris weekend escape! Roll through Bandipur at dawn for jungle sightings, soak in Ooty's lush gardens and breezy peaks on Saturday, then hop aboard the vintage toy train to Coonoor on Sunday before heading home.
Getting there
Takes a bit longer, but it is way gentler on your car. Just watch your speed in the forest, and remember the gates shut tight from 9 PM to 6 AM.
Saves time, but those 36 hairpin bends are intensely steep! Skip this one if it is raining or your brakes are not in top shape.

Drive back to Mysuru
Wind down via Gudalur with plenty of buffer time so you comfortably clear the Bandipur forest gates before the strict 9 PM night curfew.
Where to eat
Incredibly flaky, crunchy layered biscuit that pairs insanely well with tea - pick them up fresh from old-school town bakeries.
Brisk, fragrant high-grown orthodox teas; buying straight from factory outlets gets you the freshest batches around.
A quintessential Ooty treat! You will find fudge, truffles, and dozens of inventive flavors in the shops around Charing Cross.
When to go
The prime mountain escape with crisp 10-25 C weather while the plains roast. Do not miss the spectacular flower show in May!
Moody, mist-draped and blissfully uncrowded as both monsoons roll in. Just take it slow and steady on the wet ghat roads.
Frosty, sparkling mornings with crystalline skies - easily the best time for jaw-dropping, clear views from Doddabetta.
Good to know
- Time your drive wisely: the Bandipur forest gate is strictly locked between 9 PM and 6 AM, so cross only during daylight or early evening.
- Always pack a warm jacket or fleece, even in summer - once the sun sets at 2,240 m, the mountain chill sets in fast.
