Malshej Ghat

Perched in the Sahyadris 160 km south of Nashik, Malshej Ghat is pure drama - think reverse waterfalls whipping over the tarmac, pink flamingos chilling on the Pimpalgaon Joga backwaters, and the ancient Harishchandragad fort.

Getting there

Fastest3.5 hr
Nashik-Pune highway to Sangamner and Alephata, then NH61 west

Smooth sailing on the highway until Alephata, but take it easy once you hit the ghat - the rains bring thick mist and slow climbs.

Day 1 - Saturday

Reverse waterfalls, pink flamingos and pure mist
  1. 1
    7:00 AMDrive

    Drive Nashik to Malshej

Cruise down the Pune highway to Alephata before cutting west into the ghat. Watch the flat farmland transform into dramatic cliffs within minutes.

Tip · Top up your tank at Alephata - fuel stops vanish once you start climbing.

  2. 2
    10:30 AMSight

    Malshej Falls and ghat viewpoints

Basalt cliffs dump wild sheets of water straight onto the road, with heavy winds blowing spray right back up at you. Pull over to soak in the valley views.

    📍 Malshej Falls, Malshej Ghat

Tip · Stick strictly to marked pull-offs - this is a busy highway, not a parking lot.

  3. 3
    12:30 PMFood

    Lunch at the MTDC resort

MTDC's hilltop spot is your best bet for a proper sit-down meal up here. Otherwise, you are living on roadside bhajiya, roasted corn, and hot chai.

Flamingo watching at Pimpalgaon Joga Dam

Pushpawati backwaters host flocks of pink flamingos from July to September, plus resident swifts, moorhens, and thrushes. Pack your binoculars!

📍 Pimpalgaon Joga Dam, Malshej Ghat

Tip · Flamingo sightings depend heavily on the rain, so consider them a lucky bonus.

  5. 5
    4:30 PMActivity

    Mist walk on the pass

Wander the crest trails and ancient rock-cut ledges. Monsoon lets you walk straight through swirling clouds, while winter serves up crisp 50 km vistas.

    Overnight at the ghat

Crash at MTDC or pick a cozy farm stay tucked just below the pass. The valley-view rooms get snapped up fast, so grab one early.

  7. 7
    8:00 PMFood

    Dinner at the resort

Day 2 - Sunday

Conquering Harishchandragad fort
  1. 8
    6:00 AMDrive

    Drive to the trailhead

Take a quick morning drive over to the Khireshwar base of Harishchandragad; if you prefer an easier climb, the Pachnai trail wraps further around the massif.

  2. 9
    7:00 AMActivity

    Climb Harishchandragad

The region's superstar 6th-century hill fort has summit caves and ancient temples. Pachnai is a chill 3-hour round trip, while Khireshwar brings a real workout.

    📍 Harishchandragad, Malshej Ghat

Tip · Hire a local guide if it is foggy - the plateau trails split in every direction.

  3. 10
    10:30 AMSight

    Kedareshwar Cave

Wade into waist-deep, bone-chilling mountain water to see a massive Shiva linga guarded by ancient carved pillars inside this mystical plateau cave.

  4. 11
    12:30 PMFood

    Packed lunch on the plateau

  5. 12
    1:30 PMActivity

    Descend to the base

Take the trail back down at a relaxed pace. Watch your footing on the rugged basalt steps - your knees will definitely feel the descent!

  6. 13
    3:30 PMDrive

    Drive back to Nashik

Wind your way back down the pass and cruise home via Alephata and Sangamner. Budget about 3.5 hours including a well-earned chai stop.

Where to eat

Roadside bhutta and bhajiya

Nothing beats hot, smoky charred corn and crispy onion fritters served right in the swirling monsoon fog.

MTDC thali

Your most comforting, no-fuss full meal right on the pass.

When to go

Monsoon (Jul-Sep)

Peak magic with roaring waterfalls, thick mist, and flamingos. Keep your driving slow and stay safely away from slick cliff edges.

Winter (Oct-Feb)

Crisp mountain air, endless horizon views, and prime trekking conditions, though the waterfalls will have dried up.

Summer (Mar-May)

Hot and hazy days. Only head out if you are committed to an early-morning summit trek at Harishchandragad.

Good to know

  • Zero ATMs or petrol pumps exist on the ghat itself, so sort out cash and fuel at Alephata before climbing.
  • Leopards roam these ghat hills, so stick to your vehicle and avoid strolling the roads once darkness falls.
