Weekend getaway from New York · #6 of 10
Cold Spring
A storybook Hudson Highlands village 70 minutes by Metro-North: antique shops on Main Street, riverside strolls at Little Stony Point and the famous Breakneck Ridge rock scramble next door.
Cold Spring is my absolute favorite quick escape. In just 70 minutes on the train, you are in a postcard-perfect Hudson Highlands village with amazing antique shops, gorgeous river views at Boscobel, and a legendary trail scramble. It is the perfect single-day getaway.
Getting there
Ditch the car keys! You can easily walk to Main Street, the village center, and the trailheads straight from the train platform.
This lets you easily hop over to nearby Beacon too, but fair warning: trailhead parking fills up super early on fall weekends.
Day 1

Catch the early train north
Hop on the Metro-North at Grand Central. The tracks hug the Hudson River the entire way, making it one of the most scenic train rides you will ever take.
📍 Grand Central Terminal, New York
Tip · Grab a seat on the left side for the best river views, and buy a round-trip off-peak ticket to save some cash.

Boscobel House and Gardens
Check out this gorgeous 1808 Federal-style mansion. The formal gardens are lovely, and the view looking across the water at Storm King Mountain is unbeatable.
📍 Boscobel House and Gardens, Garrison
Tip · Look out for the seasonal trolley to the village and station if you visit in summer or fall; otherwise, a quick taxi does the trick.

Scramble up Breakneck Ridge for epic 360-degree views of the Highlands. If you want something chill, Little Stony Point has an easy flat loop and a sweet beach.
📍 Breakneck Ridge Trailhead, Cold Spring
Tip · Breakneck is a serious, steep scramble, not a walk in the park. Wear proper hiking shoes, pack plenty of water, and start early on weekends.

Train home along the river
Hop back on the Metro-North at Cold Spring. Sit back and watch the sunset light dance on the water as you cruise home to Grand Central.
📍 Cold Spring Station, Cold Spring
Tip · Keep a close eye on the train schedule; Sunday evening trains leave roughly hourly and get packed during peak autumn weeks.
Where to eat
Main Street packs a punch with everything from quick-and-easy sandwich spots to cozy sit-down brunch joints.
Grab some takeout and head to Little Stony Point for an amazing picnic right on the Hudson River.
When to go
This is peak season! The stunning autumn foliage brings massive weekend crowds, so definitely catch the early train.
Enjoy perfect cool hiking weather, beautiful blooming gardens at Boscobel, and far fewer crowds than in autumn.
Catch the seasonal trolley to Boscobel, and cool off post-hike on the lovely little sandy beach at Little Stony Point.
Good to know
- Leave the car at home: the station, Main Street, and the Breakneck Ridge trailhead are all an easy walk from each other.
- Get a head start on your hike, especially on fall weekends when the Breakneck trailhead parking and the trail itself get super busy.
- Pack plenty of water and wear real hiking shoes for Breakneck Ridge; it has steep, exposed scrambles and is definitely not a casual stroll.
- Double-check the Metro-North timetable before heading out; weekend Hudson Line trains run about once an hour.
