Where to eat
Satara's ultimate fiery morning kick. It is a spicy sprouted-bean curry topped with crunchy farsan, best enjoyed with soft pav.
No-nonsense, soul-satisfying local platters served at family-run joints. They are delicious, extremely filling, and easy on the wallet.
Roadside stalls near the plateau whip up steaming cups of ginger tea and fresh local snacks - the perfect post-walk reward.
When to go
The main event! The plateau transforms into a colorful floral carpet. Remember to book your permits online early because weekends sell out fast.
Perfect weather for hiking the forts and chilling by the waterfalls, though you will see lush green meadows instead of wildflowers.
The waterfalls are at their roaring, dramatic best, but the flowers are still sleeping - wait until August if you want to see the bloom.
Very hot and dusty. The plateau is dry and the waterfalls slow down to a trickle, so it is best to skip these months.
Good to know
- Lock in your Kaas permits online way before your trip if you are heading there during the peak August-September weekends.
- Respect the flowers and stay on the designated boardwalks - this is a sensitive UNESCO site with very delicate flora.
- Monsoon makes the waterfalls look epic, but the trails get incredibly slippery, so pack a pair of shoes with solid grip.
- Keep plenty of cash handy. Network signals can be patchy, and local stalls near the gate do not always take digital payments.
