Weekend getaway from Pune · #1 of 10
Lonavala & Khandala
Pune's classic hill escape, 90 minutes up NH48: monsoon waterfalls at Bhushi Dam, the 2,000-year-old Karla and Bhaja caves, easy fort climbs and chikki shops for the ride home.

Ditch Pune after breakfast to catch the morning mist. This weekend is a classic: ancient caves and a cool fort climb on day one, epic viewpoints and waterfalls on day two, and rolling home with bags of sweet chikki.
Getting there
Take the scenic route! It takes you right past Kamshet, Karla, and Bhaja, so your holiday starts the minute you drive. Just brace yourself for the heavy Sunday evening rush back to Pune.
No car? No problem. Hop on a local or express train straight to Lonavala. Hop off at Malavli station for the caves and fort, then grab a local auto-rickshaw to cruise around the viewpoints.

Irresistible, rich slabs of chocolate-walnut and almond fudge sold right next to Lonavala station. A must-buy treat!
Crispy, hot pakoras paired with a half-cup of strong tea at the viewpoints. It tastes absolute best when enjoyed in a light monsoon drizzle.
This iconic spiced potato slider is a street food masterpiece. Skip the hotel versions and grab it hot from a busy bazaar stall.
When to go
Pure monsoon magic. The waterfalls roar, the hills turn an impossible green, and the weekend crowds arrive in full force.
Cool breezes and crystal-clear blue skies. This is the absolute best time for exploring caves, hiking forts, and enjoying fog-free views.
Warm and sunny during the day, but the evenings stay wonderfully cool. Note that the waterfalls dry up and the lake levels drop.
