Getting there
Our favorite way to arrive - those final miles down from Echo Summit serve up stunning views of the entire lake. Pack snow chains in winter, and watch out for holiday ski traffic that easily pushes the drive past four hours.
Grab a handy train-plus-bus ticket from the Bay Area. Once you land, casino shuttles from Stateline make it super easy to hit up most of the South Shore ski resorts without needing a car.
Day 1
Cruising over the summit to the South Shore- 17:30 AMDrive
Drive up and over Echo Summit
Ditch the city early to beat the traffic. Your reward is the jaw-dropping descent from Echo Summit, where the massive, bright blue lake suddenly fills your windshield.
Tip · Seriously, hit the road before 8 AM. Weekend traffic crawling through Sacramento is no joke.

This lively pedestrian zone at the base of the gondola is packed with sunlit patios, cozy cafes, and gear shops. It is super walkable, so you can just park once and explore.

Heavenly Scenic Gondola
Hop on the gondola for a breathtaking 2.4-mile ride up to an observation deck. The entire lake spreads out below you, and the views are spectacular in both summer and winter.

Take CA-89 to the stunning overlooks above Emerald Bay. It is a gorgeous green glacial cove cradling tiny Fannette Island. Look for the trail that leads down to the water.

Hike the Emerald Bay trail
Trek the steep, scenic mile down from the rim to the shoreline. The bay glows a stunning turquoise from the sandy beach. Just remember, the climb back up will build a serious appetite!

Tip · Skip this if you are running late. The Sunday drive back to the Bay Area is much easier if you hit the highway before 4 PM.

Drive back to San Francisco
Head back over Echo Summit and trace US-50 and I-80 home. Plan on about three and a half hours, maybe stopping for a tasty dinner in Sacramento to let any heavy traffic clear out.
Tip · If it is winter, check the chain control reports before you head out. Big Sierra storms can slow summit traffic to a crawl.

When to go
Epic ski season! Heavenly rises directly above the town, plus there are a dozen other resorts nearby and easy casino shuttles to get you there.
Prime beach and hiking time. Enjoy sunny, warm days, refreshing alpine water, and breathtaking sunset alpenglow in the evenings.
These shoulder months are wonderfully quiet and budget-friendly, though some high trails stay snowy and local spots might have shorter hours.
Good to know
- Always carry snow chains from November through April. Mountain highway checkpoints pop up fast whenever a Sierra storm rolls in.
- Hit the road before 8 AM on Saturday and head home before 4 PM on Sunday to escape the brutal weekend ski traffic.
- At 6,200 feet, mountain altitude is no joke. Keep a water bottle handy and take it easy on your first day.
- No car? No problem. Grab an Amtrak train-to-bus ticket from Emeryville straight to South Shore or Truckee, then use casino shuttles to reach the slopes.
