Getting there
Easily the most scenic way to go - you will hit gorgeous waterfalls and cute mountain towns. Winter drivers, pack chains and track WSDOT in case of avalanche control closures.
Takes a bit longer, but Snoqualmie Pass is a safer bet in winter since it rarely closes. Plus, it makes a killer return loop so you can experience both passes.

Ditch Seattle, cut through Everett, and follow US-2 straight into the Skykomish River valley. Keep your eyes on the horizon - the Cascades grow more massive by the mile.

Right off the highway, this roaring 94-foot waterfall is a total showstopper. Grab a spot in the roadside lot and take the quick, easy boardwalk trail to get up close.

Head south on US-97 over beautiful Blewett Pass to join I-90 at Cle Elum. It is a gorgeous, alternative mountain crossing that will get you back to Seattle in about 3 hours.

When to go
Sun-soaked days floating the river, catching outdoor theater, and enjoying endless alpine evenings. Expect high energy and lots of families.
Oktoberfest vibes take over the entire town. The main street festival is a blast, but you must lock in your lodging months in advance.
The village transforms into a snowy, glowing Christmas dreamland. Throw snow chains in your trunk and keep tabs on WSDOT road reports.
The ultimate secret season. As the snow melts, the waterfalls along US-2 put on a show, and you will easily snag tables without waiting.
Good to know
- Do not wait on lodging - lock in your stay months ahead for Oktoberfest and the December Christmas lighting weekends.
- Keep an eye on WSDOT pass reports in winter. If avalanche control shuts down Stevens Pass, you can easily detour through Blewett Pass.
- Weekend parking downtown is tough, and the streets are packed with walkers. Take it slow and stay patient around Front Street.
- Do not just show up at the Reindeer Farm - they require online bookings and will turn away walk-ups.
