Drive home via WA-20 and I-5
Cruise off the island via the bridge and follow WA-20 to Burlington. Zip south on I-5 to reach Seattle in about 90 minutes, completely skipping the ferry line on the way home.
Where to eat
Coupeville's cozy cafes serve up these famous, plump mussels farmed right in Penn Cove. They are a legendary Puget Sound delicacy!
Feast on fresh Dungeness crab, clams, oysters, and wild salmon. You will find them on menus all over the island, mostly hauled in from local waters.
If you are visiting in late summer, look out for plump, wild blackberries making sweet appearances on island dessert menus.
When to go
Gorgeous sunny weather and peak blackberry season! The catch? Huge ferry lines. Catch the earliest boat possible.
Southern Resident orcas frequently cruise the nearby waters. Pop into Langley's Whale Center to get the full story!

- Download the Washington State Ferries app. Mukilteo car lines can back up for hours on busy afternoons, so exiting via the Deception Pass bridge is your best ticket home.
- Make sure to grab a Discover Pass before you go; it covers parking at Fort Casey, Fort Ebey, and Deception Pass state parks.
- Keep a sharp eye out for local deer wandering near the roads, especially when navigating those blind corners around twilight.
- Don't be startled by low-flying Navy jets from NAS Whidbey. They are a regular sight here, so expect some roaring noise around Oak Harbor and Coupeville.
