- A Hong Kong SAR passport valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area.
- A passport issued within the last ten years.
- A return or onward ticket.
- Proof of accommodation for the stay.
- Evidence of sufficient funds, and travel medical insurance is expected even though it is not checked at every border.
What happens when you arrive
There is no application. You present the HKSAR passport at the external Schengen border, which for a direct flight means Lisbon, Porto or Faro, and are admitted as a short-stay visitor.
If you route through another Schengen country, your entry check happens at that first airport rather than in Portugal, and the days start counting from there.
Keep the entry stamp legible. It is the evidence of when your 90 days began, and a missing or smudged stamp is the traveller’s problem to argue, not the border’s.

- Hong Kong is far enough away that almost nobody flies to Portugal alone, and that is where the 90 days trip people up. The allowance is spent across the whole Schengen area, so a fortnight in Spain and a week in France on the same trip come out of the same 90, and the 180-day window is rolling: it is counted backwards from whatever day a border officer is looking at you, not from January.
- The exemption belongs to the HKSAR passport, but a BN(O) passport is not the problem people assume. Swiss SEM, which publishes the Schengen-wide nationality list, exempts British National (Overseas) holders for stays of up to 90 days in their own right, alongside British Citizens and the other British categories. So a Hong Konger with both books is visa-free on either. What is genuinely different is a Document of Identity for Visa Purposes, which carries no exemption, and a Mainland Chinese passport, which needs a Schengen visa. Hong Kong permanent residence on its own confers nothing here.
- Ninety days is a visiting allowance and nothing more. It does not permit paid work, and it cannot be turned into a residence permit from inside Portugal without leaving and applying properly.
