What happens when you arrive

If you route through another Schengen country, your entry check happens at that first airport rather than in Portugal, and the days start counting from there.
Keep the entry stamp legible. It is the evidence of when your 90 days began, and a missing or smudged stamp is the traveller’s problem to argue, not the border’s.

- Hong Kong is far enough away that almost nobody flies to Portugal alone, and that is where the 90 days trip people up. The allowance is spent across the whole Schengen area, so a fortnight in Spain and a week in France on the same trip come out of the same 90, and the 180-day window is rolling: it is counted backwards from whatever day a border officer is looking at you, not from January.
- The exemption belongs to the HKSAR passport. A British National (Overseas) passport, a Document of Identity for Visa Purposes, or a Mainland Chinese passport each follow different rules, and holding Hong Kong permanent residence on its own does not confer it.
