What happens when you arrive
Nothing is applied for in advance. You present the Mexican passport at the border and are admitted as a short-stay visitor.
Keflavík is a common first point of entry into Schengen on transatlantic routings, in which case the stamp is issued in Iceland and the 90 days start there.
Coming via Madrid, Paris or Frankfurt instead, the entry check happens at that airport and Iceland is an internal flight with no further immigration control.

- The trap on this route is not Iceland, it is the United States. A large share of Mexico to Iceland itineraries connect through a US airport, and the US has no international transit zone: you clear US immigration even to change planes. Mexico is not in the Visa Waiver Programme, so there is no ESTA option here: it takes a US visa in your own right, a B1/B2 or a C-1 transit visa, entirely separate from the Schengen exemption, and the airline will check it before boarding in Mexico. A direct European connection avoids the problem and is worth pricing before you assume the US routing. Connecting through Canada does not avoid it: Mexican citizens have needed Canadian permission since February 2024, and the cheap eTA is open to them only if they already hold a US visa or have held a Canadian one in the last ten years, so the traveller trying to dodge a US visa is exactly the one who cannot use it.
- Iceland is in Schengen but not in the EU, so its own customs and duty allowances apply on arrival even though the passport check is the shared Schengen one.
- Ninety days is generous against Icelandic winter daylight but not against the weather. Ring Road sections close at short notice between roughly October and April, so an itinerary built to the edge of the allowance leaves nothing for being weathered in.
