Yes, and you apply online. Mozambique is on none of Vietnam’s visa-exemption lists, but since 15 August 2023 Vietnam has issued its e-visa to citizens of every country and territory. It runs up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, at 25 or 50 US dollars. Unusually for this region there is also a resident Vietnamese embassy in Maputo, so anything the e-visa cannot cover has a local answer.

How to apply for a Vietnamese e-visa from Mozambique

Apply on Vietnam’s own portal. The government runs the e-visa directly and charges 25 US dollars for a single entry or 50 for multiple, paid online. Agency sites sell the identical application with a markup on top.

Type your name exactly as the passport machine-readable zone prints it. Mozambican passports are issued in Portuguese and compound surnames are ordinary, and the approval is matched character by character against the document at check-in. A mismatch is fixed by applying again, not by explaining at the desk.

Choose multiple entry if the trip includes a hop out to Cambodia, Laos or Thailand. The choice is made at application and cannot be upgraded later.

Allow more than the published three working days. Four to seven is common enough that booking a non-refundable flight against the shortest published time is a poor trade.

The yellow fever question on this route bites on the way HOME, not on the way out, and almost nothing written for Vietnam mentions it. Mozambique is not a yellow fever transmission-risk country, so your passport alone does not trigger Vietnam’s rule. Mozambique’s own rule is the one to plan around: it requires a certificate from arriving travellers aged one and over who are coming from a country with risk of transmission, and it counts an airport transit of more than twelve hours in such a country. Since a full dose is valid for life under the 2016 WHO change, holding the certificate is far simpler than auditing every connection you might be rebooked onto.
There is a resident Vietnamese embassy in Maputo, which is not the norm in the region and changes what is possible. Travellers from a great many African capitals have to deal with whichever Vietnamese mission is accredited from another country, which turns anything needing a physical visa into a cross-border errand. A Mozambican applying for a long stay, a work permit or a student visa, none of which the e-visa covers, has a mission in their own capital to deal with. For an ordinary holiday you will still never need it, and that is the point: use the online route, and know the embassy exists for the cases the online route does not reach.
A lot of Maputo to Vietnam traffic is business rather than tourism, and it changes which e-visa you buy. Viettel’s joint venture Movitel has been operating in Mozambique since 2012 and is one of the country’s largest mobile networks, built on a national tower and fibre footprint, and the commercial relationship that came with it means repeat trips rather than one holiday. Anyone travelling on that kind of business wants the 50 dollar multiple-entry version from the start. Buying single entry and then leaving the country means a fresh application from outside Vietnam, which is a much slower problem to solve mid-trip than to avoid at the outset.
There is no direct flight, so the itinerary is part of the visa question. Every routing from Maputo runs through Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha or Dubai, and the leg you choose decides both whether the yellow fever certificate is engaged and whether you need a separate transit permission. Check the transit rules for the hub before you book, not after: they are set by the hub’s country and have nothing to do with Vietnam.
