What happens when you arrive

There is nothing to arrange with Switzerland before you travel. Present a Tongan passport and you are processed as a visa-exempt visitor.

You will be registered in the Entry/Exit System, fully operational at every external Schengen border since 10 April 2026. Facial image and fingerprints are taken on the first crossing and checked against the record afterwards, replacing the passport stamp.

The 90 days runs across the whole Schengen Area on a rolling 180-day basis, so time in France, Germany or Italy draws on the same allowance as time in Switzerland.

Plan the transits first. There is no direct service from Tonga to Europe, and every itinerary connects through a country with its own rules, which is where the paperwork on this trip actually lives.

This waiver is a treaty, not a concession, and that is unusual. Most visa-free access to the Schengen Area is granted unilaterally by the EU listing a country in its own regulation, and can be withdrawn the same way. Tonga’s rests on a mutual agreement signed on 20 November 2015 and ratified on 8 June 2016, under which EU citizens travel to Tonga on the same terms. Reciprocal arrangements are not immune to suspension, but they sit on a different and firmer footing than a unilateral listing.
It covers service and diplomatic passports too, which many waivers do not. Tongan officials, delegates and their staff travelling on official documents are inside the same arrangement as an ordinary tourist, so there is no separate application for an official trip. Waivers that cover only ordinary passports are common enough that this is worth confirming rather than assuming in either direction.
The hard part of this journey is everything before Switzerland. From Tonga every route to Europe runs through Auckland, Sydney, Nadi or a North American hub, and each of those has its own transit position for a Tongan passport that is quite separate from the Schengen one. A ticket that connects through New Zealand or Australia may require permission that the European leg does not, and it has to be arranged before departure. Check the routing, not just the destination.
Ninety days is the visitor allowance and it is not a foothold. Tonga is outside the EU and EFTA, so a Tongan citizen has no labour-market rights in Switzerland and the waiver confers none. Working or studying needs a Swiss permit arranged in advance, and no amount of visiting converts into one.
