Do American passport holders need a visa for Canada?

No. United States citizens do not need a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization to visit Canada. Carry a valid US passport when flying. A border officer normally admits a visitor for up to six months, but entry and the exact departure date remain the officer’s decision. Criminal inadmissibility and restricted goods can matter more on this route than the visa rules.

Entry requirements

  • A valid United States passport when travelling by air. US citizens are exempt from both Canada’s visitor visa and its eTA.
  • A credible visit plan, including where you will stay, how you will support yourself and when you intend to leave. An officer may ask for evidence even though there is no advance application.
  • An honest declaration of goods, including food, plants, firearms or other weapons, cannabis products and currency or monetary instruments totalling 10,000 Canadian dollars or more.
  • If you have an arrest or conviction, especially for impaired driving, check admissibility before departure rather than relying on the absence of a visa application.

What happens at the Canadian border

There is no visa or eTA form to submit. Present your passport and answer the border officer’s questions about the purpose and length of the trip, accommodation, funds and your return plans.

Make a complete declaration. The current CBSA traveller checklist specifically calls out firearms and weapons, cannabis in every form, food and plant products, and currency or monetary instruments of 10,000 Canadian dollars or more.

The officer decides whether to admit you and for how long. Most visitors are allowed up to six months, but a shorter date can be written in the passport or set in a visitor record. That date controls, not the six-month default.

Good to know

  • A US state’s cannabis law stops at the international border. CBSA says bringing cannabis across without a Health Canada permit or exemption is illegal in every form, including oils containing THC or CBD, regardless of whether it was bought legally or prescribed. Do not take dispensary purchases north and do not bring Canadian products back across the border.
  • A driving-under-the-influence conviction is not merely a traffic-history question in Canada. IRCC says impaired driving may make a traveller criminally inadmissible, including for serious criminality. Depending on the record and time elapsed, the relevant route may be rehabilitation or a temporary resident permit, and it should be resolved before reaching the airport or land crossing.
  • Road travellers carrying a firearm need a separate plan. Every firearm or weapon must be declared, undeclared weapons may be seized and criminal charges can follow, and non-residents without a Canadian firearms licence use the prescribed Non-resident Firearms Declaration for eligible temporary imports. Restricted items need additional authorization and many weapons are prohibited, so confirm the classification before leaving home.
  • US permanent residents are also exempt from both a visitor visa and an eTA, but their documents depend on how they travel. By air, IRCC requires a valid passport from their country of nationality plus proof of US permanent residence, such as a valid green card. At a land or water crossing directly from the United States or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a valid green card or equivalent proof of status is enough and a passport is not required. This page’s passport guidance is specifically for US citizens flying to Canada.

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa for Canada?

No. US citizens need neither a visitor visa nor an eTA. Carry a valid US passport when travelling by air.

How long can an American stay in Canada without a visa?

Visitors are normally admitted for up to six months, but the border officer decides the actual period. Follow any shorter date placed in your passport or visitor record.

Can I enter Canada with a DUI conviction?

Not automatically. Canada can treat impaired driving as criminal inadmissibility. Check whether you qualify for rehabilitation or need a temporary resident permit before travelling.

Can I take cannabis or CBD from the United States into Canada?

No, not without a specific Health Canada permit or exemption. The border prohibition includes cannabis in every form and products containing THC or CBD, even when they were legally purchased.

Can an American drive into Canada with a firearm?

Only if the firearm is eligible and all declaration and authorization rules are met. Every firearm must be declared, and restricted or prohibited classifications can require further authorization or prevent import entirely.
