Do Yemeni passport holders need a visa for Mauritius?

How to apply from Yemen

Work out where to lodge it first, because that is the part with no obvious answer. The immigration office sets out three steps in order: apply through a Mauritian diplomatic or consular representative; where there is none, submit the application at an Air Mauritius office; and in the absence of both, submit it by mail to piovisa@govmu.org.

Mauritius has no mission in Yemen. Across the wider region it keeps an embassy in Riyadh, a consulate-general in Dubai and an embassy in Cairo, so an applicant already living on a residence permit in the Gulf or in Egypt has a mission to use, and one applying from Yemen itself is working down to the later steps.

Allow the time the office asks for. It states that a visa is issued as far as practicable within twelve working days once the application is complete, and that applicants should apply at least one month before travelling.

Wait for the decision before booking anything you cannot cancel. The office is explicit that applicants should not travel before the outcome is known, and a traveller who arrives without a required visa may be sent back at the carrier’s expense, which is why airlines refuse boarding rather than let it be argued at the gate.

The visa still does not guarantee entry. Admission is decided by the immigration officer at the airport, and it is that officer who sets how long you may stay on this visit.

• The visa is free, and knowing that changes who you should be talking to. The immigration office states plainly that visas and extensions of stay are issued free of charge, and its application page repeats it: visa is free of cost. There is no government fee to pay at any stage, so any charge quoted to you is an intermediary’s, not Mauritius’s. That is unusual enough among visa-required nationalities that travellers assume a fee is being hidden from them and go looking for an agent to find it.
• The email address everyone quotes is the last resort, not the front door. Guidance on this route almost always opens with piovisa@govmu.org, which is a real address and does work. But the office lists it third, after a Mauritian mission and after an Air Mauritius office, and it applies only in the absence of both. If you are in a country with either, going straight to email means submitting outside the route the office expects, and it is the kind of thing that turns twelve working days into a much longer wait with nobody to ask.
• Being able to get back matters as much as being allowed in. The listed conditions of entry include being eligible to re-enter your country of origin or residence, alongside the return ticket, and the application separately requires a residence permit valid at least three months beyond your departure from Mauritius. For a Yemeni applicant living in the Gulf, that is the requirement most likely to fail quietly: an iqama running out during the trip, or an exit and re-entry permission not arranged, refuses the journey on the strength of your paperwork at home rather than anything Mauritius has decided.
• Two figures circulate that are not in the requirements. The first is six months of passport validity: Mauritius asks that your passport be valid beyond the intended period of stay and does not name a number, so a passport with four months left can be perfectly acceptable here while being refused elsewhere on the same trip. The second is a fixed sum per day. The official condition is adequate funds to meet the cost of your stay, evidenced by last month’s bank statement, and the per-day figures repeated on travel sites are summaries rather than a published threshold. Neither is a reason to delay a trip or renew a document you do not need to renew.
