Do British passport holders need a visa for the Bahamas?

No. British citizens do not need a visa to visit The Bahamas. The Department of Immigration lists United Kingdom citizens among the nationalities exempt from a Bahamian visa, and the United Kingdom is on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ designated list. You are stamped in at the border for a period the immigration officer decides, up to a legal maximum of eight months, and the FCDO says that is usually 30 days in practice.

Entry requirements
- A British passport valid for at least six months. The FCDO advises six months beyond the date you plan to leave The Bahamas, so work from that figure. Passport cards are not accepted.
- A return or onward ticket, or other means of leaving The Bahamas.
- Evidence of funds to support yourself for the stay, or a local sponsor who will receive you.
- A completed Bahamas Immigration Disembarkation/Embarkation Card, presented at the border.
- No intention to take up any gainful employment while in the country.
What happens on arrival
Fill in the Bahamas Immigration Disembarkation/Embarkation Card and hand it over with your passport at the border. The officer interviews you briefly, checks the return ticket and means of support, and stamps a period of stay into the passport.
That stamped period is the one that counts. The Department of Immigration is explicit that the maximum of eight months is not automatic and that the length granted depends on the officer at the port of entry. Read the stamp before you leave the hall.
If you want longer, apply for an Extension of Stay through the Department of Immigration before the stamped period runs out. Since 18 September 2024 there is a non-refundable $200 processing fee, you are interviewed in person, and you need a return ticket, a local address, your landing card and a sponsor’s passport and address.
Good to know
- The eight-month figure that circulates online is the ceiling, not what British visitors are given. The FCDO says a 30-day stamp is the norm, and the Bahamas itself says anyone planning more than 90 days should check the rules for their own country. Plan a longer stay around an extension application, not around the number eight.
- Most British routings go through the United States, and the Bahamas leg eats into the US allowance. If you enter the US on an ESTA, the FCDO notes that days spent in The Bahamas count towards the 90 days the ESTA gives you, because the Caribbean does not reset the clock. A Miami or Orlando stopover on either side of the trip needs its own ESTA check as well.
- Overstaying is a criminal offence in The Bahamas, not an administrative lapse. The FCDO lists fines, detention and deportation as the penalties, and an extension can only be applied for while the current stamp is still valid, so a late application is an overstay rather than a late extension.
- Admission is not automatic even when you meet every requirement. The Department of Immigration says the officer can still refuse leave to land, and the interview does ask about funds and a return ticket, so carry proof of both rather than assuming a British passport settles it.
Frequently asked questions
Do British citizens need a visa for the Bahamas?
No. The Bahamas Department of Immigration lists United Kingdom citizens among those who do not need a Bahamian visa, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs includes the United Kingdom on its list of countries whose citizens do not need one.
How long can UK citizens stay in the Bahamas without a visa?
For the period stamped on arrival, which the immigration officer decides. The legal maximum is eight months, but the FCDO says British visitors usually get 30 days, with extensions possible up to eight months.
How long must a British passport be valid for the Bahamas?
At least six months. The FCDO advises that the expiry date should be at least six months after the date you plan to leave The Bahamas.
Can I extend my stay in the Bahamas as a British visitor?
Yes, by applying to the Department of Immigration before your stamped period expires. There is a non-refundable $200 processing fee, an in-person interview, and you need a return ticket, a local address, your landing card and a sponsor’s details.
Do I need a US ESTA to get to the Bahamas from the UK?
Only if your routing touches the United States, which most do. If it does, the FCDO notes that your time in The Bahamas counts towards the 90 days your ESTA allows.
Can British citizens work in the Bahamas on a visitor entry?
No. Visitors are not allowed to engage in any form of gainful occupation, and declaring an intention to work is a ground for refusal at the border.
