Do Australian passport holders need a visa for Indonesia?

Yes. Australia is not on Indonesia’s visa-free list, which runs to 19 entries and is mostly ASEAN, so an Australian pays for entry. • An Australian passport valid for at least six months, which the immigration directorate states for the visa on arrival, the e-VOA and the visa-free route alike.
• A return ticket, or an onward ticket continuing to another country. This is a stated condition rather than a suggestion.
• A visa on arrival, bought at the counter at a designated immigration checkpoint, or an e-VOA obtained online before you fly.
• For an application made online, a valid Mastercard, Visa or JCB card, which are the networks the directorate names.

Two schemes, and Australia is on the paying one

Indonesia keeps separate lists and it is worth knowing which one you are on. The visa-free visit list, the Bebas Visa Kunjungan, has 19 entries: Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Singapore, Myanmar, Laos and Timor-Leste, plus Suriname, Colombia, Hong Kong, Türkiye, Brazil, Peru, Kazakhstan, Macau and Belarus. Australia is not among them.

The visa on arrival list is much longer, 97 entries, and Australia sits at number 8 on it. That route can be taken two ways: applied for online in advance as an e-VOA, or bought at the immigration counter on arrival. The stated requirements are the same either way, a passport with at least six months of validity and a return or onward ticket.

Applying online adds one requirement that catches people at the last step. The directorate lists the accepted payment methods as Mastercard, Visa or JCB, so an application is only as good as the card you have with you.

Good to know

• The e-VOA is tied to where you arrive, which is the condition least likely to be mentioned in a summary. The immigration directorate publishes a list of checkpoints for e-VOA holders: 16 airports, 11 land border posts and a long list of seaports. Ngurah Rai in Bali is on the airport list, as are Soekarno-Hatta and Juanda, so the ordinary tourist routes are covered. The point is that the list exists at all. An itinerary arriving somewhere unlisted, by private boat or at a smaller regional airport, is outside what the e-VOA covers, and that is worth checking before you buy one rather than after.
• Being on the long list rather than the short one costs money, and the short list is not the one people assume. Indonesia’s visa-free arrangement runs to 19 entries and reads mostly as a regional one: nine of them are the ASEAN neighbours. The others are a scattered group, Suriname, Colombia, Hong Kong, Türkiye, Brazil, Peru, Kazakhstan, Macau and Belarus. There is no version of that list that an Australian passport fits, so the visa on arrival is not a fallback for Australians, it is the route.
• Six months of passport validity is the rule across every route, which removes an argument people sometimes have with themselves. The directorate states it for the e-VOA, for the visa on arrival at the counter, and for the visa-free visit as well, and for the online visa it words the requirement as six months from the date of arrival in Indonesia. A passport with five months left does not become acceptable by choosing a different scheme, because all of them ask for the same thing.
• Two things the directorate’s own visa FAQ does not tell you, which is worth saying plainly rather than filling in from elsewhere: it gives neither the price of the visa on arrival nor how long it lets you stay. Its published fee schedule covers Indonesian travel documents rather than visas. Both numbers are widely quoted on travel sites and both are the kind of figure that changes, so take them from the application system itself when you apply rather than from an article, and treat any price you were told last year as out of date until the checkout screen agrees with it.
• One exception in the text is worth knowing if it applies to you. The return or onward ticket requirement for the visa on arrival is stated with a carve-out for transport crew stopping to join their vessel and continue to another country. That is a narrow case and it is not a general exemption, but it is the only place the directorate relaxes the onward-ticket condition, so anyone travelling in that capacity should read the wording rather than assume the tourist rule applies to them.
