How to apply for an Indonesian visa from Togo

Apply on Indonesia’s official e-visa portal. It is the government’s own site and issues the visa directly; agency sites charge a markup for the same application.

Choose the visitor category that matches the trip. The standard single-entry visitor visa for tourism gives 60 days from arrival and can be extended in Indonesia, which is a longer initial stay than the 30 days visa-on-arrival travellers get.

Get the yellow fever vaccination at least ten days before you arrive, and keep the certificate with your passport. Since 11 July 2016 the certificate is valid for life, so an old one does not expire, but it has to be the international certificate rather than a domestic vaccination record.

Read the current fee on the portal at the point of payment. Indonesian visa fees are set in rupiah and move against the CFA franc, so a figure quoted anywhere else is a guess by the time you use it.

• Togo is not a Calling Visa country, and that is the single most useful thing on this page. Indonesia operates a separate and much slower regime for a short list of nationalities, where the visa cannot be issued without inter-ministerial approval. Indonesia’s immigration service publishes that list and it is Afghanistan, Israel, North Korea, Liberia, Nigeria and Somalia. Two of those are West African, so advice written for the region often assumes the clearance applies more widely than it does. A Togolese applicant uses the ordinary online route and should not be talked into paying an agent to navigate a process that does not apply.
• The yellow fever certificate is a condition of entry here, not a health recommendation. Indonesia has no yellow fever itself; the requirement exists to keep it out, and it applies because of where you are travelling from rather than where you are going. Arriving without a valid international certificate can mean quarantine or refusal at the port health desk, which sits before immigration. This is the requirement most likely to stop a trip that is otherwise perfectly documented.
• The certificate follows your route, not just your passport. If you are flying from Lomé the requirement plainly applies. It also applies if you have passed through another transmission-risk country and cleared immigration there. A pure airside transit that never crosses a border does not trigger it. Since the certificate is valid for life once you have it, the simplest answer is to hold one rather than to reason about each itinerary.
• Sixty days is the initial grant and it is longer than most visitors get, which changes how you plan. Travellers from visa-on-arrival countries land with 30 days. A Togolese visitor visa starts at 60 and can be extended from inside Indonesia. The trade is that none of it can be arranged at the airport: everything has to be approved before you board, so the flexibility is at the far end rather than the near one.
