Do Indonesian passport holders need a visa for India?

Yes, but India charges Indonesian nationals nothing for the e-Visa. Indonesia is one of 22 countries whose row reads zero in every column of both Indian e-Visa fee schedules, tourist and business alike. You still apply online and wait for the authorisation, and your stay is still capped at 90 days at a time.

Entry requirements

An e-Visa applied for online and granted before departure. Free does not mean issued at the counter; the Electronic Travel Authorisation still has to come through.
An Indonesian passport valid at least six months, carried with the old one if it was replaced after the authorisation was granted.
Arrival at a designated airport or seaport. The e-Visa is not written for land borders, and the site contradicts itself about the twelve land ports it also lists.

Eligible, and priced at nothing

Indonesia sits at entry 71 of India’s e-Visa eligibility list, which runs to 174 numbered slots covering 173 countries because Kenya appears twice. Application is online and travel waits on the grant of the authorisation.

Both fee schedules then read zero. On the country-wise e-Tourist visa fee schedule dated 9 July 2026, Indonesia is row 70 and every one of the four columns reads 00: the 30-day visa applied for from April to June, the same visa from July to March, the one-year visa and the five-year visa. On the business, medical and medical attendant schedule dated 15 April 2026, Indonesia is row 71 and all three columns read 00 as well.

That is not a common position. Reading the four tourist columns down all 175 rows, 22 are zero throughout, and reading the three business columns down all 176 rows of the other document, the same 22 names come up. They are Argentina, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Micronesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Niue Island, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Seychelles, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uruguay and Vanuatu. Most of the world pays 200 US dollars for the five-year tourist visa. Indonesia pays nothing for any of them.

Good to know

For ordinary passports the waiver runs one way, and Indonesia’s own rules are where you see it. Indonesian immigration publishes the list of countries entitled to its electronic visa on arrival and India is entry 28 on it. That it is paid is plain from the same page, which answers what to do when an e-VOA payment fails and asks applicants to attach proof of payment. It does not print the figure, so none is quoted here. So an Indonesian travelling to India pays nothing for the e-Visa, while an Indian travelling to Indonesia buys one on the way in. Anyone reasoning from reciprocity will get this pair backwards.
A free visa is still a visa you have to be granted before you fly. The portal is explicit that for every eligible nationality other than the three it names for visa on arrival, and Indonesia is not one of them, the application has to be filled online and the applicant must wait for the confirmation and grant of the authorisation before travelling. There is no counter to present a zero-rated entitlement at. Both schedules also carry a note that a bank charge of 3 per cent is added to the applicable fee, which on a row of zeros gives you nothing to pay, but it is worth knowing the line is there before a payment screen surprises you.
There are two ceilings on a tourist visa, and the visa portal only shows you one of them. The portal gives the annual one: maximum stay in India during one calendar year should not exceed 180 days on the one-year and five-year e-Tourist visas, and the immigration bureau adds that the 180 days count an e-Tourist visa and a paper tourist visa together. The per-visit ceiling is published separately, by the bureau, and it is lower. Continuous stay during each visit shall not exceed 90 days for nationals of every country eligible for the e-Visa except the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan, whose nationals get 180. Indonesia is not among those four. So a five-year visa is a five-year right to keep coming back in stretches of up to 90 days, never a right to settle in for six months, and the traveller who reads only the portal will believe the opposite.
The e-Business visa is written the other way round, which is easy to misread across the two. There the bureau and the portal agree that continuous stay during each visit shall not exceed 180 days, and that anyone intending to stay longer must register with the FRRO within two weeks after the 180 days expire. So the business visa gives a longer single stay than the tourist visa does for an Indonesian passport, and attaches a registration duty the tourist visa does not. Read the category you actually hold rather than the one a summary describes.
Entry is narrow, departure is wide, and the portal argues with itself in between. An e-Visa admits you through designated airports and seaports; the FAQ answers a question about land-border entry with a flat no, while the site’s own checkpost schedule lists twelve land ports as entry points. Departure is unambiguous: you may leave from any Indian immigration check post. The e-Visa is also non-extendable and non-convertible, so a stay that has to run longer is a fresh application made from outside the country rather than anything the FRRO will convert for you.
