Do Bangladeshi passport holders need a visa for India?

Yes. Bangladesh is on India’s e-Visa eligibility list, at entry 14. What is unusual is how India’s own fee documents treat it: Bangladesh has no row at all on the tourist fee schedule, and on the business and medical schedule it is the only country given a dash, with medical and medical attendant visas priced at zero.

Entry requirements

A valid Bangladeshi passport with at least six months of validity, plus a granted Electronic Travel Authorisation if you are travelling on an e-Visa.
Arrival at a designated entry point. For overland travel that means one of the twelve land ports on the portal’s checkpost schedule rather than any crossing you can reach.
For hospital treatment, either a medical visa obtained in advance or an e-Medical visa, and a clear idea of how many attendants are travelling, because the number allowed is capped by nationality.

Eligible on one page, unpriced on another

Bangladesh sits at entry 14 of the e-Visa eligibility list, which runs to 174 numbered slots covering 173 countries because Kenya appears twice. Eligibility means the application is made online and you wait for the authorisation to be granted before travelling.

The fee documents do not follow. The country-wise e-Tourist visa fee schedule dated 9 July 2026 runs 175 rows and does not contain Bangladesh at all: row 13 is Bahrain and row 14 is Barbados. The business, medical and medical attendant schedule dated 15 April 2026 does list Bangladesh, at row 14, and it is the only row on that document where any column carries a dash instead of a number. Business reads as a dash, medical and medical attendant read 00.

Read together, the only e-Visa India publishes a price for against a Bangladeshi passport is the medical one, and the price is nothing. That is not the same as saying the tourist e-Visa is unavailable, and nothing on either document says so. It does mean a traveller has no published figure to hold India to for anything other than medical travel. If the trip is tourism, the regular visa applied for through the Indian high commission’s application centre is the route that does not depend on a schedule which leaves you out.

Good to know

Bangladeshi nationals may bring three medical attendants, which is more than any other nationality named. The immigration bureau’s medical page caps medical attendant visas at not more than two persons for foreign nationals other than Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals, allows only one for Pakistani nationals, and allows three for Bangladeshi nationals. It also permits a change of the hospital endorsed on a visa only case by case and on documentary proof, and requires anyone other than a Pakistani national holding a medical or medical attendant visa valid for more than 180 days to register within 14 days of arrival. If your family is travelling with a patient, the three-attendant allowance is the number to plan the group around.
The portal says you cannot enter overland and then lists twelve land ports you can enter through. Its FAQ answers a direct question about land-border entry on an e-Visa with a flat no, saying entry is only through the designated airports and seaports. Its own authorised checkpost schedule, on the same site, gives a land port list of Raxaul, Rupaidiha, Darranga, Jogbani, Agartala, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, Moreh and Attari. Five of those twelve are on the Bangladesh border: Haridaspur, which is the Indian side of the Petrapole and Benapole crossing, along with Gede, Ghojadanga, Agartala and Dawki. The contradiction bites hardest where the land border is the ordinary way to travel, and between Bangladesh and India it is, so confirm your crossing with the check post or the carrier before you set out rather than trusting either page alone.
Departure is far less restricted than arrival, and the exit list is much longer. The portal says you may depart from any Indian immigration check post, and its exit schedule runs to a long list of land crossings including Akhaura, Banbasa, Changrabandha, Dalu, Dawki, Dhalaighat, Gauriphanta, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Hili and more, none of which appear on the twelve-port entry list. That is India’s rule about leaving India, and nothing more. A crossing appearing on the exit list says nothing about whether the country on the far side will admit you there, or whether it is open at all. Plan the inbound leg against the short list, the outbound against the long one, and the far side against that country’s own rules.
A hospital is required to report you to immigration within twenty-four hours, both ways. Under the rules on the obligation of hotels, hospitals and educational institutes, every hospital, nursing home or medical institution providing lodging must take particulars and a signature from every foreign patient on arrival and again on departure, keep them electronically for a year, and transmit Form III, formerly Form C, to the registration officer within twenty-four hours of arrival and within twenty-four hours of departure. The same duty covers rented rooms, homestays and guest houses. Carry your passport to admission, because someone else is legally obliged to file against it.
The e-Visa cannot be extended or converted, and the penalties changed in 2025. The portal states the e-Visa is non-extendable and non-convertible, so a stay that needs to run longer is a fresh application from outside the country. The bureau now sets out overstay, non-registration, activity not commensurate with the visa granted and non-filing of the required forms under the Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025, with penalties from 10,000 to 3 lakh rupees for each offence as well as imprisonment, and it adds that violating visa norms is likely to affect the chances of obtaining entry into India in future. One forgiving detail: if your passport was replaced after the authorisation was granted, you may travel on the new one provided you carry the old one it was issued against.
