Do Mauritian passport holders need a visa for India?

Yes, an e-Visa applied for online, and India charges Mauritian nationals nothing for it. This is one of the few pairs where the courtesy runs both ways: Mauritius asks no visa of Indian nationals at all, and India puts Mauritius among the 22 countries whose row reads zero on every column of both fee schedules.

Entry requirements

An e-Visa applied for online and granted before departure. The fee is zero but the authorisation still has to be issued, and there is no counter alternative for Mauritian nationals.
A Mauritian passport valid at least six months, carried together with the previous one if it was replaced after the authorisation was granted.
Arrival at a designated airport or seaport. The e-Visa is not written for land borders, which matters if you are routing through a neighbouring country rather than flying in.

Free in one direction, unnecessary in the other

Mauritius is entry 101 on India’s e-Visa eligibility list, which runs to 174 numbered slots covering 173 countries because Kenya is listed twice. Application is online, and travel waits on the grant of the Electronic Travel Authorisation.

The price is nothing. On the country-wise e-Tourist visa fee schedule dated 9 July 2026, Mauritius is row 99 and all four columns read 00: the 30-day visa from April to June, the same visa from July to March, the one-year visa and the five-year visa. On the business, medical and medical attendant schedule dated 15 April 2026, Mauritius is row 100 and all three columns read 00 as well. Twenty-two of the 175 rows are zero throughout, and the same 22 names carry across to the other document.

Going the other way there is no visa to be free of. The Mauritius Passport and Immigration Office publishes a country-wise requirement table of 197 entries, and India is entry 76, reading "No visa required." So the arrangement is symmetrical in cost without being symmetrical in effort: an Indian can book a flight to Mauritius on the day and arrive with no visa at all, while a Mauritian must apply in advance and be granted the authorisation before an airline will board them. Free is not the same as nothing to do.

Good to know

Free is not the same as unconditional, and the condition is the length of each stay. India publishes the annual ceiling on its visa portal, 180 days in a calendar year on the one-year and five-year tourist visas, and publishes the per-visit ceiling somewhere else entirely. The immigration bureau’s terms say continuous stay during each visit shall not exceed 90 days for nationals of every country eligible for the e-Visa except the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan, whose nationals may stay 180. Mauritius is not among those four. The bureau also counts an e-Tourist visa and a paper tourist visa together against the annual 180, so a mission-issued visa earlier in the year is already spending the same allowance.
The Mauritian table has four tiers, and knowing that stops you generalising from your own entry. Its 197 entries divide into 113 reading no visa required, 63 reading a sixty-day visa on arrival, six reading a two-week visa on arrival, and 15 requiring a visa before travel. India sits in the largest tier. What the table settles is the visa question and only that; the conditions an officer applies at the border are set elsewhere and the document does not describe them. That matters when you are planning a trip with companions on other passports, because the same table that waves an Indian through gives a Nigerian or an Iranian two weeks on arrival and sends 15 nationalities to apply in advance. Check the row rather than assuming the table is a two-way list.
The zero is a fact about two documents, and those documents are the e-Visa schedules. One covers e-Tourist, the other covers e-Business, e-Medical, e-Medical Attendant and e-Conference. A visa applied for through an Indian mission is a different instrument priced on a different basis, and categories with no electronic form at all, employment and study among them, appear on neither schedule. So read the zero as settling what the e-Visa costs, not as a statement about every Indian visa a Mauritian might need. Both schedules also carry the line that a bank charge of 3 per cent is added to the applicable fee, which against a row of zeros leaves nothing to pay.
An e-Visa cannot be extended or converted, and the portal argues with itself about land entry. It is explicit that the visa is non-extendable and non-convertible into any other category, so a stay that needs to run longer is a fresh application made from outside India. On entry points, its FAQ answers a question about land borders with a flat no while the site’s own checkpost schedule lists twelve land ports among the entry points. Departure is not in dispute: you may leave from any Indian immigration check post.
