Do Chinese passport holders need a visa for Turkey?

No, and this changed recently. The Turkish foreign ministry exempts ordinary Chinese passport holders from visas for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, as of 2 January 2026. Advice written before that date says you need one, and a great deal of what is online still does. Official passport holders are exempt for 30 days, so here the ordinary passport is the better document.

Entry requirements
- An ordinary passport of the People’s Republic of China, valid for at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay, which for a 90-day exemption means 150 days of validity at entry.
- No visa, and nothing to apply for in advance, for travel of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- A purpose the exemption covers. Work and study are handled by Turkish embassies and consulates rather than by arriving.
New since January, and the everyday passport is the better one
The Turkish foreign ministry’s China entry states that ordinary passport holders of the People’s Republic of China are exempt from visas for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, as of 2 January 2026. The date is written into the entry, which is unusual on that page and is the clearest signal that this is a recent arrangement rather than a long-standing one.
Holders of official passports are exempt for stays of up to 30 days. That is the reverse of the usual pattern, where a government-issued document is treated at least as generously as an ordinary one, and it follows from the sequence: the new exemption was written for the ordinary passport, and the official arrangement was left where it was.
Passport validity comes from statute rather than from the entry. Article 7.1b of the Law on Foreigners and International Protection, no. 6458, asks for a travel document valid at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay, which for a 90-day allowance is 150 days at entry. The ministry exempts three categories from that article and a Chinese ordinary passport is in none of them.
Good to know
- The date in the entry is the most useful thing on this page, because it tells you which advice to throw away. Türkiye wrote the exemption as applying from 2 January 2026. Guidance published before then, including agency pages, forum answers and older articles, describes a visa requirement that no longer exists for an ordinary Chinese passport. If a source does not say when it was last checked, assume it predates the change and check the ministry’s own entry rather than arguing with a travel agent about it. Two limits on that. The change concerns visiting: work and study still go to a Turkish embassy or consulate, and so does any stay beyond the exemption. And because you are exempt, there is no e-Visa to buy for a holiday, so anything offering to sell you one is selling a document an ordinary Chinese passport no longer needs.
- Being newly exempt is not the same as being exempt without limits, and the limit is a rolling one. The allowance is 90 days in any 180-day period, and the ministry states separately that this ceiling is binding for all foreigners travelling to Türkiye. So it looks back from today rather than resetting on each arrival, which matters most to the frequent visitor: a fortnight in March is still on the clock in July. The ministry also says a second passport does not help, since it is not possible to spend 90 days on each of two different passports within the last 180 days.
- Ninety days of stay wants 150 days of passport, which is a sum rather than either of the round numbers people carry in their heads. Türkiye asks for the duration of stay plus 60 days. Three months is not enough and six months is more than the rule requires, though the ministry itself advises six months from arrival and an airline check-in desk is likelier to apply that habit than the statute. The exemptions from the validity article are for national identity card countries, countries whose expired passports are accepted, and diplomatic, special and official passports. None of those reaches an ordinary Chinese passport.
- Three Chinese travel documents get three different answers, and readers conflate them constantly. An ordinary passport of the People’s Republic of China is exempt for 90 days in any 180-day period since 2 January 2026. A Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport is exempt for 90 days. A Macao Special Administrative Region passport, ordinary or official, is exempt for 30 days. Same country, three documents, and the Macao holder gets a third of what the other two get. Hong Kong also issues documents that are not passports at all and are treated differently again, which has its own page.
- The 30-day figure on the official passport is easy to misread as a typo, and it is not. The entry gives ordinary passport holders 90 days in any 180-day period and official passport holders 30. The ministry defines official passports as covering diplomatic, service, special and official documents, so a delegation travelling on service passports is on the shorter allowance while a colleague travelling privately on an ordinary one has three times as long. If you hold both and the trip is not official, the ordinary passport is the one that gets you the longer stay.
Frequently asked questions
Do Chinese citizens need a visa for Türkiye?
Not on an ordinary passport. The Turkish foreign ministry exempts ordinary Chinese passport holders for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, as of 2 January 2026.
When did that change?
The ministry writes the exemption as applying from 2 January 2026, so anything published before that date describes the old visa requirement.
How long can an official passport holder stay?
30 days. The ordinary passport gets the longer allowance here, which is the reverse of the usual pattern.
Are the 90 days counted in a window?
Yes, 90 days in any 180-day period, and the ministry states that this ceiling binds all foreigners travelling to Türkiye.
How much passport validity is needed?
The duration of stay plus 60 days, so 150 days at entry for the 90-day exemption. The ministry separately advises carrying six months from arrival.
Can I use a second passport to stay longer?
No. The ministry states it is not possible to stay 90 days on each of two different passports within the last 180 days.
