Do Swazi passport holders need a visa for Turkey?
By Simran Raheja · Product Manager · SEO and Content, Tripmojo · Updated · Reviewed by Simran Raheja
Yes. Citizens of Eswatini need a visa to enter Turkey, and it must be a sticker visa issued by a Turkish mission before you travel. Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists Eswatini ordinary and official passport holders as required to have a visa, with no e-Visa option and no visa on arrival. The mission that handles Eswatini is the Turkish Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, which is concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Eswatini. Apply at least a month before travel, because the fee is not refunded if the application is refused.

Entry requirements
- An Eswatini passport valid for at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay on the visa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises six months from the date of arrival, so treat six months as the working rule.
- A Turkish sticker visa issued before departure. There is no e-Visa and no visa on arrival for this passport.
- The documents the Pretoria embassy asks for with the application, typically the pre-application form, photos, proof of accommodation, return travel and funds for the stay.
- Evidence that the purpose of the trip matches the visa you hold. A tourist visa does not cover work, which needs a separate work visa and permit.
How to apply for a Turkish visa from Eswatini
Start at the Pre-Application System for Turkish Sticker Visa at visa.gov.tr. Everyone who is not visa exempt goes through it: you enter your nationality, passport and travel details, and the system either redirects you to the e-Visa portal if your passport qualifies or books you an appointment at a mission. For an Eswatini passport it is the appointment.
The mission is the Turkish Embassy in Pretoria. There is no Turkish embassy in Mbabane, only an honorary consulate, which does not issue visas. The embassy takes visa applications on weekday mornings between 09:00 and 12:00 only, so plan the trip across the border around that window.
Lodge the application at least one month before you intend to travel. That is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ own recommendation, and the fee is not refunded if the application is rejected, so it is worth getting the paperwork right the first time rather than re-applying.
Check the validity and number of entries printed on the sticker before you fly. Turkish visas from missions are commonly issued for a set period of stay rather than a blanket 90 days, and the passport validity rule is measured against that period.
Good to know
- Do not buy a Turkish e-Visa. Turkey’s official e-Visa portal is real, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says which nationalities may use it on a country by country basis, and Eswatini’s line simply says a visa is required. Compare it with neighbours: Namibia’s line says ordinary passport holders can obtain an e-Visa as of 5 May 2025, South Africa’s line names the e-Visa portal, and Eswatini’s line names nothing. Agency sites that offer an e-Visa for Eswatini are selling an application that will not be accepted at the border.
- Eswatini also does not get the conditional e-Visa that some African passports do. For countries such as Libya or Nepal the MFA says holders of a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit may take a one month single entry e-Visa instead of a sticker visa. That sentence is absent from Eswatini’s entry, so holding a Schengen or UK visa does not change the answer here.
- The country appears as Eswatini, not Swaziland, on the MFA visa list, so look under E when checking the list yourself. The older bilateral relations page on the same site is still titled Swaziland, and the pre-application dropdown has used both names over time, so if one name is missing try the other before assuming the passport is not recognised.
- The embassy handling your application is in Pretoria, roughly four hours by road from Mbabane, and the Ambassador is concurrently accredited to Eswatini and Lesotho from there. Eswatini’s own embassy for Turkey is in Brussels, which is irrelevant for the visa but explains why searching for a Turkish mission in Mbabane turns up only the honorary consulate.
- The passport validity rule is 60 days beyond the visa’s duration of stay, in force since 1 January 2015 under article 7.1b of Law 6458, but the MFA also advises six months from arrival. The six month figure is the one to plan around, because a mission can set its own standard when it issues the sticker.
- Most Emaswati reach Turkey through Johannesburg, so the connection is at Istanbul on the way out of Africa, not on the way in. A Turkish visa, once issued, does not guarantee entry: the MFA states that visas do not give an absolute right of entry, and the border officer decides on the day, so carry the same accommodation, funds and return ticket evidence you gave the embassy.
Frequently asked questions
Do Eswatini citizens need a visa for Turkey?
Yes. Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists Eswatini ordinary and official passport holders as required to have a visa. It is a sticker visa from a Turkish mission, applied for before travel.
Can Swazi passport holders get a Turkey e-Visa?
No. The MFA list gives Eswatini no e-Visa route, unlike Namibia or South Africa, and no conditional e-Visa for holders of a Schengen, US or UK visa. A sticker visa from the embassy is the only option.
Where do I apply for a Turkish visa in Eswatini?
At the Turkish Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, which is accredited to Eswatini. Start with the pre-application at visa.gov.tr to book the appointment. Visa applications are accepted 09:00 to 12:00 on weekdays.
Is there a Turkish embassy in Mbabane?
No. Turkey has an honorary consulate in Mbabane, which does not issue visas. The Turkish Embassy in Pretoria is concurrently accredited to Eswatini and Lesotho and handles visa applications.
How early should Emaswati apply for a Turkey visa?
At least one month before travel. That is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ recommendation, and the visa fee is not refunded if the application is rejected.
How much does a Turkish visa cost for Eswatini citizens?
No official page we could read publishes a sticker visa fee for Eswatini, and the MFA fee table covers only e-Visa nationalities. The amount is confirmed at the pre-application stage or by the embassy.
Does Turkey list the country as Eswatini or Swaziland?
The MFA visa list says Eswatini. Older pages on the same site, including the bilateral relations page, still use Swaziland, so check both names when searching.
Do Eswatini citizens need a transit visa to connect through Istanbul Airport?
Turkey’s only published airport transit rule is the Electronic Airport Transit Visa introduced on 15 April 2024 for ten nationalities flying on to Mexico, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela, and Eswatini is not one of them. If your bags are checked through on one ticket and you stay airside, that rule does not apply to you, but the moment you must clear passport control, for separate tickets, a bag collection or a hotel, you need the sticker visa, so confirm your exact routing with the airline before you fly.
Do I need medical insurance for a Turkish visa from Eswatini?
Yes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says every sticker visa applicant must hold medical insurance valid for the whole stay in Turkey, so bring the policy to the Pretoria appointment. For a tourist visa backed by an invitation, the MFA also expects evidence of sufficient or regular income.
