Why visit the Andamans

Havelock - officially Swaraj Dweep - carries the headline sights: Radhanagar's long white crescent for sunsets, Elephant Beach for snorkelling straight off the sand, and dive schools that make it one of the easiest places in India to try scuba. Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) is the smaller, slower sibling, cycled end to end between its three beaches and natural rock bridge.

Port Blair itself is more than a transit stop. The Cellular Jail's evening light-and-sound show gives the islands' history real weight, and nearby Ross Island's colonial ruins and North Bay's coral make an easy combined boat day before or after the outer islands.

Best time to visit the Andamans

October to May is the season - calm seas, reliable ferries and the water clarity the islands are known for, with December to February the busiest and best-weather stretch. The monsoon months from roughly June to September bring rough seas and rain; ferries and watersports get disrupted, and much of what you came for pauses. Book ferries and dives ahead in the December holiday weeks.

How many days do you need in the Andamans

Five to six days is the sweet spot: a day and a half around Port Blair including the Cellular Jail show, two to three nights on Havelock for the beaches and a snorkel or dive day, and the ferry hops between. A seventh day fits Neil Island without rushing. Build a buffer around your return flight - ferries move with the weather, and the airport is on a different island from the beaches you came for.

Getting to the Andamans

Fly into Port Blair (Veer Savarkar International), with direct flights from Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru. From there, private catamaran ferries connect Port Blair, Havelock and Neil on a daily schedule - book them with your dates rather than on arrival, especially in season. There is no tourist access by sea from the mainland worth planning around, and inter-island helicopters are limited. On the islands, scooters, cycles and hired cabs cover the short distances.

Where to stay in the Andamans

Split the stay: a night or two in Port Blair bookending the flights, and the heart of the trip on Havelock, where beach resorts range from dive-shack simple to genuinely premium along Beach No. 5. Neil Island suits one slow night if you are adding it. On Havelock, staying near the eastern beaches keeps the ferry jetty and dive schools close, while Radhanagar on the west side is the sunset trip everyone makes regardless.
