Why visit Ooty

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the anchor - a UNESCO World Heritage line where the rack-and-pinion engine hauls you through forests, tunnels and tea slopes; the Coonoor-to-Ooty stretch is the classic ride if the full climb from Mettupalayam doesn't fit your dates. Around it sit the reliable pleasures: the Government Botanical Garden, Doddabetta - the Nilgiris' highest point - and the tea factories where the estate tour ends in a tasting.

Coonoor, half an hour down the line, is the connoisseur's day: Sim's Park, the Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock viewpoints, and quieter tea country than Ooty's own. Best time to visit Ooty

Ooty's season is long: October to June all works, with January mornings frosty and April to June the classic summer-escape peak when the plains empty into the hills - book early for those weeks. The monsoon, July to September, is misty and green with regular showers; it photographs beautifully but turns the viewpoints into lotteries. October to March is the quiet-confident pick, with clear air and thin crowds.

How many days do you need in Ooty

Three days covers the classics - the toy train, botanical gardens and Doddabetta on one axis, the Coonoor tea day on the other. Getting to Ooty

Coimbatore is the nearest airport, about three hours below by road; Mysore and Bengaluru serve the northern approach through Bandipur's forest - a drive with genuine wildlife-spotting odds at dawn. The romantic arrival is the full toy train from Mettupalayam, connecting from the Nilgiri Express out of Chennai; book it well ahead, it sells out fast. In town, cabs and autos cover the sights, and one hired vehicle for the trip is the comfortable default for groups.

Where to stay in Ooty

Colonial-era hotels and garden guesthouses around the lake and Charing Cross keep the classic Ooty feel and the sights close. Tea-estate stays outside town - and around Coonoor especially - swap convenience for silence and plantation views, and suit couples and small groups best. Families tend to prefer the lake side for boating and easy evenings. Each package can be adjusted to the neighbourhood and budget you prefer.
