Why visit Kalpa and Kinnaur

Kalpa is the anchor: a village of orchards and old wooden temples perched above Reckong Peo, facing the Kinnaur Kailash massif straight on - sunrise here, when the peaks catch first light across the valley, is the trip's defining moment. The drive up is an event in itself, on a road cut into cliffs above the Sutlej that ranks among the Himalaya's great engineering spectacles.

The Sangla valley is the second act: the Baspa river running through orchards and wooden villages, Kamru fort above Sangla town, and at the road's end Chitkul - the last inhabited village before the Tibet border, where India quite literally runs out of road. Between the two valleys, stops at the Nako lake village or the roadside waterfalls stretch the trip naturally toward Spiti for those continuing on.

Best time to visit Kinnaur

April to June is the spring window - orchards in blossom, clear peaks and comfortable days. September to October is the harvest season, when the apple crates stack by the road and the air is at its clearest. The monsoon, July and August, is the season to avoid: this stretch of highway is landslide-prone and delays are routine. Winter buries Kalpa in snow - beautiful, cold and best left to travellers who accept closed roads as part of the deal.

How many days do you need in Kinnaur

Five to six days makes the classic loop from Shimla: a night en route at Sarahan or Rampur, two nights in Kalpa, and two in the Sangla valley with the Chitkul morning. Kinnaur is the acclimatisation-friendly approach, and packages can join the two.

Getting to Kinnaur

Shimla is the gateway - reached by air via Chandigarh, by the Kalka toy train, or by Volvo from Delhi - and from there it is a full day's mountain drive to Kalpa via the NH-5. Reckong Peo, just below Kalpa, is the district hub where the buses terminate. One hired vehicle with a hill-experienced driver is the sensible way to travel here; the road demands local knowledge, and public transport in the side valleys is sparse.

Where to stay in Kinnaur

Kalpa's guesthouses and small hotels trade on one thing - the Kinnaur Kailash view from the balcony - and it is worth confirming your room actually has it. Sangla and Rakchham have riverside camps and guesthouses along the Baspa, while Chitkul's simple homestays let you wake up in the last village itself. En route, Sarahan's temple town makes the traditional first-night halt. Each package can be adjusted to the mix you prefer.
