Why visit Spiti

The journey itself is half the point. The Shimla-Kinnaur approach climbs through apple country past Kalpa and Nako's lake village, hardening gradually into Spiti's moonscape at Tabo, whose thousand-year-old monastery murals are the valley's quiet masterpiece. And the Chandratal night - the crescent lake at 4,300 metres near the Kunzum pass - is the finale most itineraries rightly save for last.

Best time to visit Spiti

June to October is the full-circuit season, when the Kunzum pass opens and the Manali exit works - this is when the classic Shimla-in, Manali-out loop runs. The Shimla side stays open far longer, making May and November possible for the lower valley. Winter Spiti, deep in snow with the valley running on homestays, is its own expedition for experienced travellers only. The monsoon barely touches Spiti itself, but the approach roads through Kinnaur can be landslide-prone in July and August - another reason itineraries here carry buffer days.

How many days do you need in Spiti

Seven days is the honest minimum for the full loop; nine is comfortable. Going Manali-first jumps to 4,000 metres in a day and is the route acclimatisation problems come from; packages here avoid it. Keep one buffer day: a closed pass or a rough stretch claims it more often than not.

Getting to Spiti and the practicalities

The circuit starts from Shimla or Chandigarh on the Kinnaur side, or Manali on the pass side - with the loop connecting both in season. There is no airport in the valley; this is a road trip by design, in one sturdy vehicle with a driver who knows the route. Carry a government photo ID for checkposts, cash beyond Kaza's unreliable ATMs, and warm layers in every month. Fuel up where you can - stations are hundreds of kilometres apart - and treat mobile network as a bonus, not a given.

Where to stay in Spiti

Kaza has the valley's widest choice, from guesthouses to comfortable hotels, and makes the natural two-or-three-night base. The village homestays - Langza, Kibber, Tabo - are the trip's soul: simple rooms, family kitchens and mornings in places that see more ibex than tourists.
