Why visit Goa

The north is the Goa most first-timers picture: the Baga and Calangute strip for shacks and watersports, Anjuna and Vagator for a younger crowd and cliff-top sunsets, and Fort Aguada standing over the river mouth. The Wednesday flea market at Anjuna and the Saturday night market near Arpora are worth planning a day around. The south is a different state in spirit - Palolem's crescent bay, Agonda's near-empty sand and Colva's long stretch suit groups that came to slow down rather than stay out.

Best time to visit Goa

November to February is the window most packages are built around - dry, sunny and cool enough for beach days and sightseeing alike, with December's holiday weeks the busiest and priciest. October and March are honest shoulder months with thinner crowds. April and May turn hot and humid, and the monsoon from June to September shuts most beach shacks and watersports, though it's also when the state is greenest and stays are cheapest. First trip? How many days do you need in Goa

Four days covers one coast properly - two beach days, the Old Goa and Panjim heritage day, and a market evening. Five days lets you do both coasts without rushing, moving base once from north to south. A weekend works if you commit to one area and skip the crossings; anything past six days is for travellers who want the monsoon-green interior, a spice farm visit or simply more of the same beach. Keep driving between the two coasts to once - it's a 90-minute hop you don't want daily.

Getting to Goa

Goa now has two airports: Dabolim (GOI) in the centre-south and the newer Manohar International at Mopa (GOX) in the far north - check which is closer to your base before booking, as the transfer difference can be over an hour. By rail, Madgaon serves the south and Thivim the north, with good connections from Mumbai and Bengaluru. On the ground, agree taxi fares before setting off, and for groups one hired vehicle for the trip beats renting a scooter per person - cheaper per head, and nobody navigates home from a night market.

Where to stay in Goa

Pick the base by the trip you want. Baga and Calangute put everything at your door but stay loud in season; Anjuna, Vagator and Assagao suit groups who want cafes and character with the noise one lane away. Panjim is the culture-and-food base with the Latin quarter outside the hotel. In the south, Palolem and Agonda are the beach-hut classics and Colva the family pick. Each package can be adjusted to the coast, neighbourhood and budget you prefer.
