Why visit Sikkim

Gangtok makes an unusually pleasant base - the pedestrian MG Marg for evenings, the ropeway over the town, and Rumtek and Enchey monasteries within an easy drive. The classic high-altitude day runs east to Tsomgo lake, glacial and often part-frozen, and on to Baba Mandir; the Nathula pass sector beyond opens to Indian nationals on permitted days. With more time, the North Sikkim circuit to Lachung and the Yumthang valley - rhododendron-carpeted in spring, snow-walled much of the year - is the state's big set piece, run as an overnight from Gangtok.

Best time to visit Sikkim

March to June is the flower season - rhododendrons in the high valleys and reliable sightseeing weather. September to November brings the year's clearest mountain views, with Kanchenjunga out most mornings. Winter is cold but workable around Gangtok, though snow regularly closes the high sectors like Nathula and North Sikkim. The monsoon, late June to early September, is the season to avoid: landslides interrupt the hill roads and the views disappear into cloud.

How many days do you need in Sikkim

Five days covers Gangtok, the Tsomgo-Baba Mandir day and the monasteries at a comfortable pace. Seven days fits the North Sikkim overnight to Lachung and Yumthang - the state's highlight - with a buffer day the mountain roads occasionally claim. Add two or three more for Pelling and the west, or for pairing the trip with Darjeeling on the way in or out.

Getting to Sikkim and the permits

Bagdogra airport and New Jalpaiguri station are the practical gateways, four to five hours below Gangtok by road; Sikkim's own Pakyong airport has limited flights. The permit layer is what makes Sikkim different: Tsomgo, Nathula and the North Sikkim sectors each require permits issued through registered operators, typically a day in advance, with passport photos and ID copies needed. Packages arrange them - travellers just carry originals. Note that Nathula is open to Indian nationals only, on designated days.

Where to stay in Sikkim

Gangtok's hotels cluster usefully around MG Marg and the ridge above it - views improve as the lanes climb. In North Sikkim, Lachung's guesthouses are simple and warm-water-by-bucket practical; treat the night as part of the expedition rather than a hotel stay.
