Why visit Kashmir

Srinagar earns a slow first act: a night or two on a Dal Lake houseboat, an early shikara ride through the floating market, the Mughal gardens stepping down to the water, and the old city's mosques and bakeries. Then come the valleys, each a day trip or overnight from the city. Gulmarg has the gondola - one of the world's highest cable cars - with meadows in summer and India's best-known ski slopes in winter. Pahalgam pairs the Lidder river with the Betaab and Aru valleys, and Sonamarg is the glacier-edged gateway to the high passes. Best time to visit Kashmir

Kashmir has two distinct seasons worth planning around. April to October is the garden-and-meadow window - tulips in April, green valleys through summer, and golden chinar trees in October, with pleasant days and cool nights. December to February is the snow season, when Gulmarg becomes a ski resort and the valley turns white; it is cold, and some high roads close, but it is the most dramatic time to visit. The shoulder weeks of March and November are quiet and cheaper, with unpredictable weather.

How many days do you need in Kashmir

Five days covers Srinagar plus two valleys - typically Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with the houseboat night in the middle. Seven days adds Sonamarg and breathing room, or an overnight in Pahalgam instead of a rushed day trip. The valleys sit one to three hours from Srinagar in different directions, so resist the urge to do two in one day; each deserves its own.

Getting to Kashmir

Srinagar airport has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities, and is the practical way in - the road trip from Jammu is long and weather-dependent. Within the valley, hired cabs work on fixed local rates, and at Gulmarg and Pahalgam local unions run the last-mile rides, so budget for those separately. For groups, one vehicle for the week with a local driver is the comfortable default; the drivers double as the best guides to what is open and worth it that week.

Where to stay in Kashmir

The houseboat night on Dal or Nigeen Lake is the signature stay - Nigeen is the quieter lake if you want stillness over bustle. In the city, hotels around the boulevard put the lake at your door. In Gulmarg, staying up at the meadow beats commuting for the sunrise gondola slots, and in Pahalgam, riverside hotels along the Lidder make the valley feel like the destination it is.
