Best time to visit Shimla

March to June is the classic season - the original summer-capital weather, ideal for the Mall evenings and day trips. December to February is the snow window, when Kufri turns into the play-slope and the town gets its postcard look; carry proper layers and flexible plans, as snowfall can slow the roads. October and November are quiet and clear. The monsoon is green but slip-prone on the walks - the season to skip if you have the choice.

How many days do you need in Shimla

Three days does the town properly: the Ridge, Mall and Jakhoo on one, the heritage circuit and toy-train joyride on another, and the Kufri or Naldehra day trip on the third. Getting to Shimla

The signature arrival is the Kalka-Shimla toy train, connecting from Delhi via Kalka - book ahead, especially for the morning services. By road, Chandigarh is about four hours below and Delhi seven to eight, with Volvo coaches running overnight. Shimla's own airport at Jubbarhati has limited flights. In town, the core is pedestrian - lifts connect the Mall levels - and cabs from designated stands handle the day trips.

Staying near the Mall and Ridge keeps the evenings at your door - the reason most first trips book there. Heritage properties trade convincingly on the Raj era, from grand hotels to cottage guesthouses on the quieter slopes.
