Why visit Nainital

The lake is the trip's centre of gravity: rowboats and pedal boats through the day, the Naina Devi temple - one of the Shakti Peethas - at the northern shore, and the flat, sociable Mall Road connecting it all for the evening walk. Above town, the ropeway to Snow View and the walk or pony ride to Tiffin Top earn the panoramas, and the old St. John in the Wilderness church and the zoo's Himalayan species fill the gentler hours.

The second act is what many visitors miss: the lake circuit beyond town. Bhimtal is larger and calmer with its island aquarium, Sattal's seven linked lakes sit in birding-rich forest, and Naukuchiatal - the nine-cornered lake - is the quietest of all, made for a slow half-day of paddling and shore cafes. Kainchi Dham, the ashram that draws visitors from around the world, sits on the same road.

Best time to visit Nainital

March to June is the classic season - the summer escape from the plains, with boating weather and long evenings; book ahead for May and June, when the town runs full. October and November bring the year's clearest air and the best Himalayan views from Snow View and Tiffin Top. Winter is cold, occasionally snowy and pleasantly empty. The monsoon, July to September, is green but landslide-prone on the approach roads and best avoided for first trips.

How many days do you need in Nainital

Three days covers the town well: the lake and Mall on arrival, the viewpoints and zoo on day two, and a slower morning before leaving. The fourth day is the lake circuit - Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal make an easy, rewarding loop with Kainchi Dham en route. Ranikhet or Mukteshwar extend the trip deeper into Kumaon for those with a fifth or sixth day.

Getting to Nainital

Kathgodam, about 90 minutes below town, is the railhead - overnight and morning trains connect it to Delhi, making the train-plus-taxi combination the smoothest arrival. By road, Delhi to Nainital runs six to seven hours. Pantnagar is the nearest airport with limited flights. In town, the centre is walkable and partly traffic-restricted; cabs handle the viewpoints and the lake circuit, and one vehicle for the trip is the comfortable group default.

Where to stay in Nainital

The Mall side puts the lake and evenings at your door - rooms with a lake view cost more and earn it. The Ayarpatta slopes above town are quieter, leafier and still ten minutes from the action. For a different trip entirely, stay out at Naukuchiatal or Bhimtal and visit Nainital as the day trip; the quieter lakes reward waking up on them.
