Why visit Rajasthan

The forts alone justify the trip. Amber rises above its lake outside Jaipur, Mehrangarh looms over Jodhpur's blue houses from a sheer rock face, and Jaisalmer's fort is still lived in - a working town inside medieval walls. Between them come the palaces: Udaipur's City Palace over Lake Pichola, Jaipur's Hawa Mahal facade, and heritage havelis everywhere in between. The other half of Rajasthan is texture: bazaar lanes selling lac bangles and block prints, rooftop restaurants over old cities, a camel or jeep ride into the Sam dunes for a desert-camp night, and the ghats and camel fair town of Pushkar as a slower stop between the big cities.

Best time to visit Rajasthan

October to March is the season - dry, sunny days that suit forts and desert alike, with cool to cold evenings, especially in the desert around Jaisalmer where winter nights drop sharply. April to June is fiercely hot in a state that is mostly scrub and sand, so summer trips work only with early starts and afternoon pauses. The monsoon, July to September, is lighter here than in most of India and turns the Aravallis green, but the classic circuit is at its best in the winter months.

How many days do you need in Rajasthan

Seven days covers a comfortable triangle - two nights each in Jaipur and Udaipur with Jodhpur or Pushkar between them. Ten days brings in Jaisalmer and the desert-camp night without rushing, which is the full classic circuit. With less time, pick two cities and do them properly rather than sampling four from a car window; the drives between stops run four to six hours each.

Getting to Rajasthan

Jaipur has the state's main airport with connections from every major Indian city, and the Delhi to Jaipur expressway makes the capital a practical starting gate too. Udaipur and Jodhpur have smaller airports that let you fly out from the far end of the circuit instead of backtracking. Trains link all the major cities, including overnight options to Jaisalmer. On the ground, one hired vehicle for the whole circuit is the standard and sensible choice - the drives are part of the trip.

Where to stay in Rajasthan

Rajasthan is the heritage-stay state: restored havelis and palace hotels exist at every budget, and one or two nights in them are worth planning around. In Jaipur, the old city and MI Road keep you central; in Udaipur, lakeside neighbourhoods earn their premium at sunset; in Jodhpur, guesthouses under the fort put the blue city at your door; and in Jaisalmer, choose between havelis near the fort and a desert camp at the dunes. Each package can be adjusted to the mix you prefer.
